| I found out my previous employer, Wonderland in Anyang, had underreported my income. That wasn't a surprise, but one pleasant surprise was they told me to come back with my bank booklet because I'm owed a tax refund. This was unrelated to Wonderland's tax fraud and I didn't even know I was due a refund until I went there. |

until you bring the booklet in and they see what else has been put into your account. You might not want to bring the booklet in 
Go to the bank and get paper copies of your history instead. Only give them the pages pertaining to what they "owe" you. If you hand them the booklet, I am not sure what will happen if there is evidence of other income they don't have record of.
As a security measure, transfer funds to another account. Open a new one if need be, or transfer the money home. |

| I actually had to get a new book last week because the bill payment machine wouldn't accept my old one after it got wet from rain. |

That doesn't matter, they want to see the booklet to look at the information pertaining to your refund. Will they act like immigration and not care about previous or additional work visa issues? I don't know the answer.
The point wasn't if you have your history hidden, the point was to ONLY show records of income pertaining to the dates they would give a refund for. Otherwise, you have no need to go back there. |

| It should be alright. There isn't anything in my banking history that I would be concerned about them seeing. |

You created drama with the "underreported" choice of words. If it doesn't change your bracket of taxation, then it is a null underreporting. If it would affect how much you owe (assuming the more you make the higher the tax) then you would owe more.
If you aren't concerned about paying more, your choice. What was the point of creating this thread if not to entice us to some danger? |

It's a very pleasant surprise that I'm receiving money that I didn't know I was due to receive. I wanted to share the story because I think it's likely there are other teachers who read this forum that would also receive money from the National Tax Service if they just show up there. This is money that they would leave behind in Korea if they don't go and claim it.
The underreported income from the howgon was an observation I found interesting and thought others would find mildly entertaining. |

Cheers for the heads up EZE ,
I've a sneaking suspicion my school has somehow shafted me on my taxes. I've been here for four years and recieved any sort of a rebate since I've started playing taxes. It's a public school so I guess admin just screwed it up somehow, I submited some statements this year but didn't get anything. I'm amazed as it's related to how much you use your card, right? I must have blazed through about 7 mill on my card alone last year. Do you just roll up to the tax office with your current bank booklet? How long till you get paid? |

That is good. However, the point I was making is that you should be careful. You haven't actually collected on it yet.
They might see it was underreported and then decide to tax you more. It can go both ways. That's all I am saying.
Please let us know when you actually collect on it how it turns out. |

| If they under reported his salary, wouldn't that mean he wasn't paying the appropriate tax and could be asked to pay more? If you underpaid in tax, why would you get a greater refund? |

I actually told them about the underreporting, but they didn't care. They understood, but didn't care. I didn't even bring it up again today, since I was dealing with the exact same people. They said they'll be sending me nearly 250,000 won in June, direct deposit. Assah!
I wouldn't be at all surprised if most teachers can go there and get refunds. In fact, they told me to come back after July 15th for some more. It looks like I'll be feeding at the trough all summer long! |

| I'm very ignorant about the tax laws here, but what I think happened is this: my former employer definitely underreported my income by around a million won. However, she was taking over 3% out for income taxes in order to do the independent contractor scam, so I was actually overpaying on income taxes despite my income being underreported. I think the tax refund might be the more than 3% I paid in taxes minus the 1.8% or so that I was supposed to be paying, with the nearly 250,000 won being the difference. |

I accidentally overlooked your post earlier, beckett, but here's a belated reply:
To what card are you referring? I don't have any bank cards in Korea. I only have my ARC card, my transit card for the buses and subway, and a Chase credit card from the USA. 
It was just a total accident that I got a refund. I wasn't even there to look for one and I didn't ask for one. It just sort of happened anyway. I had gone to the pension office that morning just to verify that my pension balance is zero, and it is. My reason for going to the tax office was to see if the independent contractor tax rate had even been paid, because I'm desperately trying to get out from under the independent contractor label. The lady asked for my ARC card and was typing things into her computer and asked for my bank number. I said I didn't know it, so she told me to come back with my bank booklet and she would set up the direct deposit for my refund. I went there today and she set it up. She said it would be deposited into my account in June.
Just your ARC card and bank booklet will do. |

If your school is withholding more than 2% of your income there is a good chance that you are due a refund. Take your pay receipts, bank books and Korean credit card receipts to the tax office and find out. Of course sometimes, if their employer underwithheld, people end up owing more. |

| Cheers I think I'm taxed at 3.5%, so I'll look into it and hopefully get a refund. |
