I've decided to start an ESL forum and I'd like to know what you would like to see from an online community. If anyone wants to help me out here I'd love to hear some answers to these questions, I can even pay you for doing it (if you want to be cold-hearted and not just donate your thoughts to me for free!).

---

1. What would make you want to come to a forum about teaching ESL?

2. What changes would you like to see from ESL forums to make them more easy to use or accessible? (sleek/user-friendly design, easier registration, etc)

3. What kinds of things do you want on an ESL forum that other forums don't have?

4. What things do you like about ESL forums in general?

5. What things do you dislike about ESL forums?

6. Would you want forums that are specific to one country or cover multiple different countries?

7. Do you see ESL forums as a lifestyle board, a job board, or a mix of both?

8. What is the most interesting thing about an ESL forum to you? Job postings? Lifestyle posts? Rants/meltdowns about living in a foreign country? ESL teaching materials?

---

Cheers to anyone who responds to this. If you want to remain anonymous, please feel free to shoot me an email at [email protected]

I'll also be looking for moderators and team members to help collaborate and spark discussions, so let me know if you're interested.

1. What would make you want to come to a forum about teaching ESL?
Get tips from others about teaching and daily life about the country.

2. What changes would you like to see from ESL forums to make them more easy to use or accessible? (sleek/user-friendly design, easier registration, etc)
An up to date search engine.

3. What kinds of things do you want on an ESL forum that other forums don't have?
A dating section

4. What things do you like about ESL forums in general?
Being able to discuss things with people without actually having to see them.

5. What things do you dislike about ESL forums?
People using the name of God/the Lord Jesus Christ in vain but if praise is rendered unto Him that isn't allowed.

6. Would you want forums that are specific to one country or cover multiple different countries?
All countries. A good idea is to have a section specifically comparing a country to another country.

7. Do you see ESL forums as a lifestyle board, a job board, or a mix of both?
Both - and for other things

8. What is the most interesting thing about an ESL forum to you? Job postings? Lifestyle posts? Rants/meltdowns about living in a foreign country? ESL teaching materials?
All - depending upon what I am looking for.

I can't really comment on the ESL aspect of things. That said, I'll just give a few thoughts.

Exercise some sort of oversight over moderators. This is not a slight against the ESLCafe moderators at all. But I have seen or heard on many boards about moderators or even admins power-tripping on users. As the top admin, be active in affairs, have clear, reasonable rules for the forums that keep any personal vendettas from coming into play.

Set up sub-forums where you can have PG areas and R areas, so to speak. Swear filters are lame, censorship in general should not be exercised site-wide in my opinion. Have a sub-forum or two where people can let off steam.

Have areas where people can complain about employers without the entire Internet able to view it. Helps to prevent a potential conflict of interest, if you know what I mean.

Have you got bored of just snatching them off the street? Very Happy

To the OP - you could maybe have a kinda 'live Jasmine' section where ESLer's (of course in their spare time) could strip off and provide services for other members of the board (for a fee of course!)

And a religious section (where no MODS dare tread!)

Online sports betting. Horses and the like. Not even horses, greyhounds and cockfights. Real shameful stuff.

That is the surest possible way to make the forum in question complete trash. Expat forums should be like the Wild West, not some simpering den of popular opinion.

Expat forums should be like the Wild West- A sweltering den of ill-repute. Think Deadwood.

I love Dave's and all, and I've made my bed here, but sometimes I wish I could join the chaos rather than poo-poo it.

If you don't like something someone says, instead of clicking "dislike," you should just spit some tobacco on the floor. Don't have any chewing tobacco in your mouth? Then damn it, you shouldn't be on the forum in the first place.

Sorry for the wall of text in advance.

There are definitely a few good ideas in this thread that I'm considering.

Firstly, no censorship. It's lame and we're all adults here.

Second, avatar changes should be able to be done by the user at any time.

Third, posting images (within a size) limit will be allowed as long as they're SFW in the main areas or NSFW in the NSFW subforum.

Fourth, moderators need to be involved in posting and in the community and exercise fair and rule-abiding judgements or be removed. When was the last time anyone saw Huh Kyung-young post?

Fifth, no stickies or announcements, ever.

Sixth, no more threads from 2004 being bumped. Threads older than a certain amount of time will be archived.

Seventh, a newbie forum for people who will ask the same questions over and over again.

Finally, if there is to be a "job posting" area, then discretion needs to be used in what is posted there. Not just any job could be posted, but it would need to include a number of different pieces of information (working hours, pay, address, contact info, etc) before it could go up. The goal for every job posting area should be to only offer up jobs that are fair, not just anyone who wants to throw some money at the problem.

I've also got a shortlist for people I think would make good mods that I'll contact soon:

ttompatz (admin?)
TheUrbanMyth
Steelrails (crazy people forum mod)
Zyzyfer
Captain Corea
cdninkorea

Do I have your votes?

Some mods have socks here. They should post the same as everyone else. One in particular likes to keep things well on topic unless he's using his other username, in which case he'll support himself.

Search engine that works instead of going through Google advanced.

NSFW wouldn't be bad.

No banning religious threads. If you're gonna read it then don't bother getting offended.

Gorf: You do know this has already been tried by many others?

What sets you apart?
