|
|
I was recently offered a job with a Chungdahm April school. Most of the people I know like working at these schools because they typically get a summer break (one week) and a winter break (one week) along with holidays, and Chungdahm is a stable company that is generally known for paying on time. However, after speaking to someone from that particular school, I learned that many employees are unhappy. Apparently, when someone leaves, they take a long time to hire a new teacher which throws more classes on the remaining teachers. It also sounds like there are a lot of arbitrary meetings, and that feedback is generally negative and not particularly constructive. I don't really want to work in those conditions, but I'm also concerned that I will not find anything better since schools in Korea are such a toss-up. I only have a year's experience, a B.A. in theatre and no TOEFL/CELTA/etc certification. Advice? |

I know people who work for the Chungdahm April schools and love it, but this particular school does sound like it's not the best.
Do you know of any good schools though? I just worry that this school has the same problems that most other schools have, and I don't want to turn down an offer now to only have to wait to get something that will essentially be the same. |

There are always exceptions. However, if this particular school has been given a bad review it might be better to pass on it. I have probably known at least 12-15 teachers who worked at Chugdahm schools and only 2 of them said it was okay by the end of their contracts. Generally, with other schools I find teachers to be around 50-50 on like/okay and dislike.
Why not try to get on at one of those Chungdahm April schools where you know some people there who love it? If they love it they are probably on good terms with someone that has contacts with the person who is in charge of hiring. |

I tried one of the schools, but they passed me over because the manager knew the manager of another school who was interviewing me and didn't want to step on their toes by interviewing me as well. So it seems like that door is closed to me.
My boyfriend currently works at the other April school. However, this coming year, we intend to live together, and we both worry that living together and working together might be too much. |

LOL what? Chungdam is one of the leading two hagwons in the country. Can't see them getting away with too much if they've elevated themselves to that position, simply out of fear of bad press. |
