Coming out in October: an American version of Oldboy, directed by Spike Lee.
Trailer
Looks pretty slick. Not sure if I will want to see it though since already saw the original, which was great. |

| I don't think anything can beat the original. The original was weird, trippy, and awesome. This looks like a far more straight forward remake. Will they keep all the weird stuff in it that was present in the Korean movie, or will they base it off the comic book? |

seems that people have no more original ideas.
Theres more to being classic than script. Its actors, sets, director, music, location. Even the budget plays a role when its tight (thats why film 4 and studio canal always make good movies).
I cringe to think about the remake of the italian job or others of that ilk. And look what they did to the ring!
I suppose therell be a 45 minute car chase in it, a body count of 122 , 74 minutes of action thats so obscene you haven't got a clue whats going on, the star will have blonde hair and huge, fake *beep* (rhymes with fits) that get their own dressing room and itll be 14 and a half hours long. Oh, and tom cruise will star in it too.
I cant wait...
I saw a T-shirt the other day that said, 'if you cant make it well, make it in 3D!'.
Or just remake it |

| I can't stand the idea of an American remake of Oldboy. No thanks. Plenty of my favourite films are American, but their remakes of successful foreign films and TV shows are typically dumbed down, puerile garbage. |

More marketing and promotion. better film distribution.
In short, it is an easy way to make more money. |

Americans hate subtitles. That's who almost all foreign language films, that have even a dim hope of making money, is dubbed in the USA. |

^^^ ditto, I've seen plenty of foreign films in the US and have NEVER seen a dubbed movie ... except for those Saturday afternoon martial arts films on TV.
I'm not gonna list EVERY foreign film I've ever seen, but , off the top of my head, ' Pan's Labyrinth', Krzystof Kieslowksi's ' Red' 'White' & ' Blue' trilogy, 'Amelie' .. I do recall all these films having subtitles. & not dubbing .
Anywho, back to Old Boy .. I just saw it on-line for the first time last night & WOW, I was blown away.

His daughter was VERY young in the original film when he was abducted.
In the trailer, they showed a TV interview of his daughter and she is older, (in her teens). In the interview , she says "I can try" when asked if she can forgive her father.
It also looks like , maybe his daughter is being held captive by his tormentor and Josh Brolin has to save her somehow ? |

Yeah i saw this way back when it was in the talks for being made into a movie. First off the remakes of many korean movies are FAILs (anyone seen the My Sassy Girl remake? it was HORRID) Secondly Spike Lee doesnt really make decent movies and they always have some kind of strange angle (personal opinion of course).
Old Boy is a masterpiece and for those of you who dont know its actually the 2nd in the Vengence trilogy. Although the only thing they have similar is that each one deals with vengence/revenge and some returning actors portray different people in each one.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengence
Oldboy
Lady Vengence
cheezsteakwit - if its the first time you saw it i HIGHLY recommend you watch the other ones. Brutal but awesome storylines in each. |

yeah it was kinda of a "step away with this direction and see where it goes" film. Chan Wook Park is a film genius for almost of his other films because of the gritty hardcore scenes. LOVE THEM. But I always loved oldboy the most because its regarded as a classic and really set the bar. |

I didn't like Oldboy at first viewing. I enjoyed it more watching it since I've been here. I was curious about a western remake. Just watched that awful trailer and am no longer curious. Seems to change everything substantial to the plot. I guess some topics are just too hardcore for western audiences.  |
