If it allowed you special search function privileges, other forum access, ability to post pics, easier applications for teaching jobs, and an avatar among other things?

I ask because I belong to a couple of other websites (over ten years) that incorporated membership programs that offered yearly, lifetime memberships, etc. actually quite helpful and good info over the years.

I only subscribe to two sites, and they both are great in terms of hobby interests and I renew every year.

Would you do that with Daves if it meant increasing your networking power, applying for jobs, and etc.?

A site which offered all those features?

Or this site?

Maybe to the former, No to the latter.

All this site offers is a pretty good jobs board (relative to the other offerings in the Korean EFL market), for which advertisers pay a pretty penny and wouldn't be half as interested in advertising its reach was limited by a paywall, and a popular (yet horrendously outdated, slow, and with very limited functionality) forum. The forum gains almost all of its value from the members who post (a value which is rapidly decreasing - the number of posts and posters have dropped dramatically over the past few years), and putting a paywall up would cause the forum to decrease in value.

Lose-lose. Might make Dave a few quick bucks, but he'd most likely lose them due to the lack of ad revenue in the long run.

I believe there's another Korea site that charges - and I can't imagine paying for it.

Nope. Why pay when you can use Facebook groups as well. I know several Facebook book groups that act like Dave's and provide helpful information.

Haha, yes, http://www.afek.info/ tried to do this. Once I tried to login and got this message below. I almost pissed my pants laughing.

YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED FOR INACTIVITY.

AFEK is a site for F-visa holders to share experiences and offer advice to each other. Despite being a member for some time, it is felt that you have not given back enough to the community to qualify for further, unrestricted access.

Many members share a lot of personal information on AFEK, and at times, that information has been shared off-site. It is felt that people who include themselves as part of the community, or donate to help keep AFEK running, are more likely to show loyalty to the community.

If you wish to continue accessing AFEK, you may do so by choosing one of the subscription plans to your right. If you choose a 1 year plan, and subsequently show yourself to be a valuable member of the community, you will NOT be asked to subscribe again at the end of 1 year.

If you choose the lifetime VIP access, you will be given access to the Job posting forums, and can take part in VIP discussions, giving you an opportunity to provide direct feedback to the site administrators and moderation team.

If you feel that you are seeing this message in error, please send an email to [email protected] and your account status will be reviewed.

It makes no/little sense when there are so many free options out there.

Want a big board? There are a few of them in Korea - this being the biggest. Want an "exclusive" board for a certain segment of the population - there are a number of them... free even. And like a poster mentioned above, there's always facebook.

Charging just sounds like a money grab, or a very poor strategic choice.

but hey, if people want to give their money for things that you can have for free... I suppose there will always be someone there willing to take it.

It makes no sense?

OK.. here's why AFEK is blocking accounts and charging lurkers for access...

Captain Corea wanted to cause problems for AFEK. He was no longer able to get access, so was going through friends - lurkers - to get information from the site and was posting it elsewhere. That information included information that could identify AFEK members. Kinda lame. AFEK accounts were locked out as a direct result of 'gloat' messages he was sending me via this forum. The 'final straw' message was sent by him on April 18th 2012. The account lockouts happened on April
21st 2012.

And since that date, no personal information has been shared from AFEK. It makes perfect sense. Only log in to pass personal information on to CC? You get blocked. If you really need access, you become part of the community or you pay towards the upkeep. It's not a cash grab at all.

And why was CC doing it? Well... he had helped set up a site that was an almost exact duplicate of AFEK. Sure, he pretends not to know much about it, but he did the design work for the site. He wants to promote the new site at the expense of AFEK, along with a few of his buddies who also got banned. Christ... one of the mods over there was booted from AFEK for posting Goatse! On a family site! If that's the kind of thing you want, I'm sure he'll send you the url via PM (along with a 'but I don't really know much about it' message).
