|
|
Currently I'm taking a 100 hour online TESOL.
I am about halfway through but I am certain that I have put in more than 50 hours of studying.
About how many hours did you take to complete?
About how long (1 month, 2 months, 3 months) did it take for you to complete?
I want to be done ASAP and I hope to be done by the end of July.
Thanks! |

I just finished my 120 hour tefl. I'm actually a bit disappointed - it was relatively easy for me. Then again, I have already been working in ESL for over a year, so perhaps my experience made it easy. Some parts were harder than others and took me weeks to get through, some were so easy I was through it in just a week. When I say "just a week" i mean a total of four hours of work, and three days of waiting and an update of another hour. I think that 120 hour TEFL means more "waiting for the tutor/approver to update your assignment" than actual work.
Am I glad I got it done? Yes. But I really do wish there was a little more to it. |

| Depends on how much you have or are willing to spend working on it. Probably 4-6 months if you have a day job and enjoy life. |

The online? Really?
I did mine immediately after I arrived to Korea. I signed up for the class on, let's call it, day 1. They then sent me all of the training materials and told me that when I was ready, I should log on to the testing system and I would have 24 hours after that to complete the exam.
I waited a couple of weeks so as not to look too suspicious. (I suppose someone could have studied all that material in 2 weeks if they really bunkered down.) Then, without studying, or even opening the study material for that matter, logged on and took the test.
Granted, I spent an ENTIRE Saturday taking the test (like 8am - 10pm), as all of the answers were in the study materials they provided and I had to find the answers and understand the concepts enough to explain them. However, it was really not too bad at all.
When I received my certificate by mail, it was accompanied by a letter stating my exam score, which was marked as A+.
I actually learned a LOT in those 14 hours and enjoyed it. So much in fact, that I actually ended up studying all of the material afterwards. |

Not all on line courses are the same.
I wish I had chosen yours.
Mine had 20 units. Each one had to be completed and emailed back before the next was sent. M-F only. Here's a sample question from unit 6 for the curious-
Task 7 – How would you explain the difference in structure and usage between these tenses to a low-level student? Illustrate your explanations with example sentences of your own:
a) Past simple and past continuous
i) Explanation of differences in structure:
ii) Differences in usage:
iii) Example sentences:
b) Past simple and present perfect

I remember a couple questions similar to that on the test.
However, I didn't know they weren't all test and finish. Turning stuff in weekly sounds like a pita. |

Yeah. Especially when your contact goes on vacation and doesn't work weekends and has many 'students' to respond to. It usually took a couple days to get a response to the assignment and the next work unit. I had classes mornings, afternoons and some evenings so I didn't have a lot of free time to do the work.
Here's another sample from lesson 4-
Task 5 – Consider the following student errors. After each error, state:
i) What the mistake is.
ii) Why you think it has been made.
iii) How you would explain and correct the mistake with a student.
a) I am a secretary for five years.
i)
ii)
iii)
b) I have eat breakfast.
i)
ii)
iii)
c) She’s liked him since six months.
i)
ii)
iii)
d) When you start work?
i)
ii)
iii)
e) I’ve been knowing her for three months.
i)
ii)
iii)
I hope these sample questions give people some idea of what getting a certification like TEFL is about.
You can research the stuff online. Lots of good websites out there. So many in fact that IMHO they obsolete TEFL qualifications. If you prepare and if you actually need this stuff for your students. |

| took me 2 weeks to finish? Depends how much you care and how much you want to learn. I just wanted the extra 100k my school would give me for having one. |

I think it depends on how much free time you have to work on it as well as how much time you want to devote to working on it. |
