My wife and I will be leaving Korea to live in USA soon. We were married in Korea last year. Do we need to get our Korean marriage certificate translated and notarized for it to be valid in USA and recognized? I'm worried that we won't be able to register our marriage in USA or won't have the proper paperwork. Also, should she get her Korean birth certificate translated and notarized as well for things like obtaining a drivers license, starting a bank account in USA, etc. If anyone has any answers and has been in a similar situation, let me know. Thank you and have a nice day. |

Assuming you would have gone to the U.S. Embassy to complete the marriage forms, which are required. Those documents are already in English, and assuming you followed through with this step, everything is already legal and can be recorded using the Embassy documents.

As I mentioned above, the documents issued by the Embassy would provide any State office with all that is needed.

A translated and notorized copy of the wife's birth certificate would be helpful, but it really depends on how she is entering the country. If she is a greencard holder then that would solve the problem of what you are suggesting since the greencard provides foreign residents with all of the privileges for banking, DLs, etc.
I wish you well on your trip home and I hope your wife enjoys living in the United States with you. |

You are already recognized as married in America. The embassy does not authenticate translated Korean marriage certificates anymore. I just did this last week and was told this, because I thought I needed that for the F-6 visa. |
