Quote:
The KTVU newscast was captured in a video posted to YouTube, in which the station displayed four incorrect pilot names on the screen and an anchor read them aloud.

"The NTSB has confirmed these are the names of the pilots aboard Flight 214 when it crashed," the anchor said. "We are working to determine exactly what roles each of them played during the landing on Saturday."

Nothing will happen because of this. Remember that this is California. Now if they had poked fun at gays, blacks or muslims, heads would roll.

There's something wrong with you if you can't laugh at that.

This.

I laughed at the stupidity of the editors. Thanks KTVU!

If it had been whites and the names read Mike Hunt and Mike Hawk I would have laughed, like I did for the Asian names, because it is a funny joke and I'm not a sensitive little bitch. Every damn day there is a new "racist" controversy.

White people need their own nations so we can say what we want.

The opposite = Insensitive little bitch.

Your example is laughing WITH. The other is laughing AT. Big difference.

Is it funny? Yes.

Is it racist? Yes.

If it were entirely reversed I would find it funny. If Asians make fun of "Mike Hunt" I would find it funny. I don't care what Asian people think of me or my group. I *nothing* their (your?) opinion. They should feel similar.

Asian name jokes are, in and of themselves, funny. There's nothing racist about that, nothing which implies the inferiority of the East Asian populace. The structure of the names simply allow for simple puns to be made with casual ease (and if you know the meaning behind the characters, the options only expand; I myself find a bit of pleasure in the crafting of Korean/Chinese names with absurd meanings). That said, people died, and more could have. Given that fact, it is vulgar of us to mock and compassionate to refrain. There are plenty of opportunities in a lifetime to share a few Asian name jokes, this is an opportunity that probably could have been passed up.

This is what people are over-looking. Are we all too sensitive about ethnic jokes these days? Yes. But what is offensive about this stunt is the timing and circumstances. Three young people are dead. Save the funnies for a more appropriate occasion.

I think its possible to laugh at the silliness of the joke without being racist and also making no reference to any casualties.

As long as people agree that cartoons of white people with big noses and black folks with big lips are funny...

I know a few posters on this thread can dish it out and take it. I'm fine with them thinking its funny

I also know some cannot. If a Korean station did the same thing to a foreign airline, they'd scream racism. Heck, if a US station did the same thing to an African or Mexican airline, they'd say the same thing.

As I said on another thread, I think people of non-Asian descent are unaware how often people of Asian descent have had taunts about Asian language thrown at them.

On top of that, it's also old and stale. At least get some new material. Asians have been hearing these same tired jokes for 20 years. I think many just rolled their eyes and said "This AGAIN..."

I'd think the people who grow weary of the "big nosed foreigner" presentations here might start to see it.

Also, if the names would be used on any other airline, including those of non-Asian descent, then one could say there isn't racism behind it. If the captain of a British Airways crash was Cap. Sum Ting Wong, then meh.

But to do it fo an Asian airline, that suggests that race was a factor, not funny names.

None of this makes any sense. It might as well be written in Swahili.

Wait, is that racist, because I'm implying Swahili is difficult and not widely known? Please tell me, SR, because apparently my racism radar is broken. But please, keep it to three sentences max.

It was in bad taste, due to the nature of what happened, but funny names by themselves aren't racist, or are so very mildly so that it doesn't really matter. In most other circumstances it probably would have been pretty funny.
