i made a list of freetalking questions that I have students use everyday for the first ten mins. of class. Ive added questions that address the past, present and future in order to encourage fluency in those tenses.
I have noticed thier fluency being improved through repetition and they also seem more comfortable talking generally.
I cut it/simplify it based on level.

Anyway, feel free to copy and use it! (and check for sp.mistakes...).

First

How was school today?
What did you do last weekend?
What did you do last night?
What are you doing later?
Did you learn anything interesting this week?
What did you do in your free time today?
What did you do last week?
What are you watching on TV later?
Did you eat enough today? (why not/why?)
Did you sleep ok last night? (Why/why not?)
What are you doing this weekend?
Did you watch anything good on TV this week?
What was your best lesson this week? (Why?)
What phone games were you playing (when)?
Did you read anything interesting on Naver this week?
How many Kakao messages did you send today? Who to?

Second

Did you see anything interesting in the news this week?
Did you fight or argue with anyone this week?
Did you watch any sports this week?
Whats your favourite song this week?
Did you do any sports this week?
Who did you call/ring today?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
How are your family?
Did you download anything this week?
Who did you meet this week (outside of school)?
Did you get into trouble at school this week?
Did anything interesting happen this week?
Did you get into trouble at home this week?
What did you have for (which meal) (when)? (eg ‘what did you have for breakfast this morning?’)
What time did you go to bed last night?
What time did you get up this morning? Are you still tired?
Did you finish all of your homework ok?

le-paul,

Your original post was excellent, no complaints. I think you should present it in a curriculum fashion.

I have some similar things which match your post 80%.

Another guy I have seen is actually closer to you.

His site is at http://a4esl.org/

If you want to compare notes, let me know. I focus more on replies than just firing out questions.

If you do lesson by lesson, eventually this equals a curriculum. Put quarter in, try again Laughing

I think these are all pretty great lesson openers - how are you - how was your weekend - etc

I think for a proper discussion however, one would need to offer better material that's closer to the questions posed in debates (hypothetical or real-life situational background+open ended question).

It's okay in small doses, or for giving a few ideas about material to use. But a lot of the questions fall kind of flat...

If you teach them about the art of asking follow-up questions, this ceases to be a problem.

Err isn't that exactly what le-paul stated in the first post? That these are supposed to be lesson openers to get the students a bit more comfortable with chatting?

actually, thats why i wrote them. I had to take a taxi twice a week with the same taxi driver and he'd ask me the same questions. So, I learned how to answer and ask them too and it really helped improve my korean chatting skills!

yeah, i did state that they are 'lesson openers' and I specifically didn't say they are debate questions.
I set a stopwatch and dont allow any korean in that time. If i hear a korean word (apart from names) they get penalised ( this week theyre getting sprayed with water).
After that, I follow a lesson plan which usually involves a book and then 20 mins or so of questions based on a topic.

Bearing in mind my lessons are usually 80 mins, theyre quite helpful!
