Has anyone heard anything about this particular academy in Dongtan?
I'd love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly.
From what my recruiter is telling me. Thy have 3 schedules. 9:20-6:40(so kindy for sure). 11-7(so maybe some kindy?). And 12-8. What gets me is that they are all for the same pay rate. That I don't like.
Also wondering about accommodations and accessibility to Suwon/Seoul. Curious to know what Dongtan is like as we'll.
Cheers all! |

Why? The three schedules are almost the same, one is longer but has a lunch break. Just curious what you expect. |

Dongtan is known in that part of Korea as the "new city" It is very new and clean, and did not exist before 2005. The M buses will take you to Seoul within an hour no matter how bad traffic is, and to Suwon easily as well. I think Seoul is 2000 Won and Suwon 1000, but I've forgotton. Lots of families in Dongtan and a good expat community called the Dongtan Clan you can find on facebook. They also have a wonderful park there called Central Park. I'm sorry, I don't know about the school. But I think most people in Dongtan are happy with their situation, they feel kind of lucky to be there. There is also a huge shopping mall called Metapolis, it is an extremely rich, young and chic area. I'm American, and never seen a city that rich even in the US, I think you'll like it, good luck!
p.s. You can catch the M buses in front of the Metapolis shopping mall. M4403 if I remember correctly is the one that will take you to Gangnam station exit 5. Another one goes to Seoul Station. |

Dongtan was covered above.
In regards to SLP... IF you are OK with the SLP contract then it is what it is (Slave Labor Program).
Do be aware that you will work 5 hours more in the classroom (per week) than the next guy at the next hagwon who is doing 30 * 50 minute classes/wk (PLUS prep time).
IF you are desperate then it is a job.

In the real world employees are typically paid for their time. If my coworkers at my present job (with the same seniority as me) were being paid the same as me, but had to be at work 1hr 20 min longer than me....I would totally understand if they were upset. Even if it was to sit at a desk or something terribly easy.
Anyway, those with the early start time feed and eat with the kids. so it's not really a break at all.
No a deal breaker, but I believe that with longer hours the pay should increase. |

I feel a little desperate. I really was wanted to start work before Sept 1 as I am planning a return to Uni next year. But it can be put off an additional year if need be.
It's tough out there. In 2005 I contacted a couple recruiters and they hounded me to the point where I was annoyed. Wanted me over to Korea ASAP. When I considered a return in 2010 I noticed the difference, but I still had a few schools want to interview me for good hours and pay. But now.....whole new ball game. Contacted about 6 recruiters...two gave me a single job to look at, then never heard back from them. Only one recruiter seems willing to put in the effort. Also contacted 2 HR departments and heard back from one, but flights not included. No thanks! |

The Korean ESL job market keeps getting worse and worse. So sad. It's almost certainly going to continue to further deteriorate in the future. |

Some of my old students are from Dongtang.
I will say one thing. They are disrespectful, but they are some of the most wonderful and interesting children I've ever met. They are very unique and a lot of them will be future leaders and dream makers.
You'll really love the kids of dongtang. I'll tell you that much. |

What makes them so wonderful I wonder? You did start by saying that they are disrespectful. In my experience, no matter how interesting with potential, disrespectful students are not the ones that I love. I don't dislike them by any means, but they just aren't at the top of who I enjoy. Different strokes. |

Hmmm, I thought I typed "Some of them can be disrespectful". But it was probably something I thought I was typing but not actually typing.
They are overall very good kids. Very creative and also well intentioned most of the time. They are spoiled but they will help out others and give what they have. Some of my kids bought me gifts and even some got me medicine when I was sick.
They are very creative and I think some of them have real world application. Just as an example, one of my students thought that fixing social problems at young ages would help with comic books. But not like... a moral ethics book in comic book form, more like making comic books weave moral issues into it better. She did a contrast about what happened in the past when people read about super heros and wanted to be them because they did good deeds, not always because they were strong. Whereas contrast to today where people want power but aren't necessarily good.
Very insightful for a middle school girl. I still remember her. She bought me a caffe latte one time. I'm not really a sellout for a drink but it was a kind thought.
I have a lot of good memories of Dongtang kids and they basically restored my faith in humanity. |
