If you're unattractive or non white I really think there are better places to go. Korea is not going to be easy for a fat white guy or a thin black girl. This is the most appearance obsessed country on the planet. Year after year this country leads the way with the highest percentage of plastic surgery. They're also sporting one of the highest suicide rates in the world. If Koreans find you unattractive, they have no use for you outside of factory work.
Do you really want to come here knowing that you were their last choice? If they could have found someone more attractive than you or "at least white" they definitely would have. Your qualifications mean nothing. Your real job here is to look like an attractive waeg. If you're not, by KR standards, an attractive waeg, they will be sure to remind you of it in your daily life.
If you're non white, you may even be denied access to certain establishments. There was the famous case a few years ago a woman of Pakistani descent being denied access to a sauna. this business openly said that the reason they denied her access it because she was a dirty foreigner, she would contaminate the water, and also that they were worried about catching aids from her.
http://thethreewisemonkeys.com/2011/10/17/multicultural-korea-dirty-foreigners-spoil-the-sauna-water-and-spread-aids/
If you came over here and ended up getting into a relationship with a Korean person many citizens here would think of your girlfriend as a traitor to her country. They would tell you that your kids had impure blood were you ever to marry and have children.
After visiting ~40 countries, my experience here is that its the most intolerant nation by far.
Why not try Thailand, Indonesia or Japan instead? |

Take a single sentence from that paragraph and refute it. |

haha, whenever I hear the impure blood thing, I always think of Harry Potter. And then the nazis...
That being said, I cant think of any job where public speaking is concerned, where being unattractive and/or uncharismatic is a plus. Look at those religious speakers in the USA for example, you could get sunstoke from the glare coming off thier teeth and they spend hours in make up/hair shop beofre going on stage.
I think I missed the bay watch episodes where fat girls were running down the beach.
But thoses Koreans, man... |

Westerners are intolerant. But it is my experience that Koreans are more intolerant. I think a fat/ugly person, or a person of color, will have a much easier time in America or the UK than they will have in Korea. These groups will face much less discrimination in the west. But of course you're right they will still receive discrimination in those countries.
I just think that people should be aware how big of a deal appearance is here. While other countries might be interested in appearance Korea is obsessed.

They're also the biggest consumers of Kimchi. Are you going to try to tie that all in together too? |

Think about the two most "famous" westerners on Korean tv.
How would you describe them physically?
Now think about what you've written....

You're not making a whole lot of effort here with your single sentence responses. Maybe you should just find another thread to not give a damn and be smug in. |

You're obviously missing my point. You laid out a number of "facts" about Korea. You've listed them out in a way that would suppose correlation and even causation.
I think you'd be hard pressed to prove some of that. |

Korea cares (too much) about appearance and Koreans get a lot of (too much) plastic surgery. Not too hard to see how those are related. The constant social pressure to look the best and be the best has to be related to the high suicide rate here. I mean what happens if you're not pretty enough or not successful enough when everyone places such a high value on that? Such a high value that one's own feelings of self worth are intricately tied to their appearance and success. I'd go so far as to say that they are "confused". Confused because it's not actually true that you're worth as a human being is an easy one to one ratio to your attractiveness or success.

I think a lot of Koreans jump off buildings for those reasons. Isn't it a known fact that several students killed themselves after not performing as well as they'd like to on their college entrance exam? But is not true that a failure academically, and the shame and failure that one would feel from being an outcast due to thier looks, are realtional? Both are failures in this society. And I think both are clearly an imputus for suicide.

Unfortunately, I've known a few ppl that have committed suicide in Korea
-one was a student in my apt building. Young girl that jumped around test time
-one was the wife of a student... mental health issues - went off her meds
-one was going through a divorce
None of them were obviously related to looks. Korea does have an issue with suicide, but I think you're playing on that to try to emphasize your point - and IMO, that takes away from many of the actual issues at play.
Again though, I notice how you didn't bother to answer my question about the most famous western Expats in korea - how beautiful are they? |

Very sorry to hear about your friends or students who killed themselves.
I'm 3 years in but unaware of the TV personality you're speaking of because I never watch TV. |

I personally find the fact that Korean's care about their appearance as a great thing. I wish more people in my country took care of themselves and cared about their physical appearance more. I'm not talking about plastic surgery, but wearing nice clothing, women wearing makeup and not letting themselves become obese.
Also, if you look around Korea, it's not hard to see that schools have zero problem hiring fat foreigners, or slobs. They are everywhere.
Also, I have a 2 year old son. I speak Korean fluently, and no one has ever told me, my wife or my son that he has 'impure blood' or that she is a traitor... And certainly not 'many citizens' say this lol.. That's funny..
I know there are racists in Korea. Just like there are in every country in the world. We have had one incident involving the fact that my child is multi-ethic.. And guess what? It wasn't in Korea... |

It's only been about a month, maybe less, since we had this conversation last.
Yea, it's too soon. |
