Trying to sell some stuff internationally. The woman on the hotline told me I should use the K-site (ebay.co.kr), but it's all in Korean.

Has anyone ever used the American or other ebays to sell stuff here? I think it's possible although all the shipping cost estimates assume you are in the U.S. (they ask for an American zip code). I'd rather not have to navigate the Korean site as my Korean is terrible.

I sell things on canadian ebay from here. The shipping fees are a problem as when I list something it gives me the different shipping options that are available for Canada. I have to estimate the costs myself, which are usually cheap but every now and then I get dinged at the post office for some reason that I can't understand due to my crappy Korean.

Technically if you are in Korea you "must" use the Korean site, so you have to pretend that you are drop shipping the items from Korea, your account will shop that you are in the USA, but that your items are located in Korea.

The other problem is tax. Ebay now reports income in the US and Canada, so you have to include it in your income tax. (well, "have to") You can decide if you want to run the risk of not reporting it and having it come up later in an audit. I think most people just try to fly under the radar, I guess it depends on your situation.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

I just registered with ebay.com and sold my first item a week ago. I didn't run into anything that said I had to use the .kr site, though it may have been in the TOS.

Anyway, yes, I had to estimate my own shipping, but other than that everything with the sale and shipping went smooth.

After the sale I found out a few things I didn't realize before: ebay will keep 10%, ebay will limit you to selling $500 a month, and ebay will hold the proceeds for two weeks. If I had known all that, I wouldn't have used ebay for the one-off sale I needed to do.

Not only does eBay keep 10% ,but PayPal also takes a cut, which is different depending on the country of the buyer, I think on average it's about 4%. They also both take this % out of your shipping charge, so you have to inflate the charge to break even.

Why in the world would they do that, especially when they keep 10%?

Selling limits are for new sellers, and are to prevent scams. Basically to stop people selling thousands of pounds of non-existent merchandise etc, which has happened in the past. Selling limits are raised the longer you sell - on my ebay account I can sell up to £10,000 per month, as I have been selling for years.

Same thing with the hold on payment - once positive feedback is received, payment is released - this is only for unestablished sellers who sell items with a reasonably high value, to prevent scams as have been seen so many times in the past.

The percentage Ebay takes (final value fees) is where they make their money, and is clearly laid out, along with listing cost etc.
