Hey all,
Will be teaching at a High School in Jillyan, Gyeongsan. Have to choose my own place and I was wondering if there are areas where there are a few there ex-pats in a particular building around here?
Cheers

I cant say I know of any foreigners in any building in the neighborhood of your high school, but welcome to the neighborhood. I'm just a few minutes down the road at Yeong Nam University.
My only advice would be to try to contact one of the foreign teachers from Daegu University and see if they might be able to give you more information about a building or neighborhood with other foreigners. That university is the largest employer of language teachers in Jillyang.
Good Luck |

| I lived in Gyeongsan about 5 years ago. It's not bad. It's almost like the countryside. If you take the bus 15 minutes toward Daegu there is a larger area where there are more stores, I believe one might be Homeever now (it was Walmart back in the day when I was there). It took 40 mins to get downtown by bus, but now there is a subway line in that area and you could transfer to that and get downtown quicker. There is one theater in the same building as KFC and Daegu Bank (or there was). There is also a small Kyobo Bookstore there (and a larger one downtown). Lots of students in that area. |

Your kinda out of the town area but around Yeungnam so it might not be so bad. My wife and I live in Okgok-dong near the train station. There are about 15 EPIK teachers that we know of and I have no idea how many university teachers. We also heard there will be a few more EPIK'ers on their way.
Daegu is easy to get to by bus or train. |

I lived in that area too, and the good thing is it is actually easier and cheaper to get to downtown Daegu area from there than it is for many people who live in Daegu. Why? Because the train fare from Gyeongsan to Daegu Station is only 2500 won and trains run until close to 3am. Daegu Station is just a short walk to the night club district near the fire station. |

I'm assuming your EPIK? What school are you working in? What area of Gyeongsan do you live? |

Some of the EPIK people, well most that we know, live near Yeungnam. Or at least across campus. Some of them live near the gate. Others live in Sampoong-dong. I know we will have at least 2 new teachers as 2 have left. I'm pretty sure we will have a few more new ones as we are supposed to be adding people to schools.
If any of you that live in Gyeongsan have questions or need any help just PM me and I will do my best. I'm sure we will all meet at the stupid education office introduction thing were our supervisor will confuse us all. Anyway good luck. |

Yeah, know exactly where you are at..about a kilometer away.
I'm not a teacher, and not sure about where you might find other teachers in this neighborhood...but if you're feeling bored and wanna get a beer sometime..let me know.

Anywhere around there is good to live;
just as long as you don't work at that cesspool of corruption and evil nonsense named Yeongnam University.
Remember: the wider the smile, the bigger the lie, and the harder the swing-back at you later. |

I know I am replying to this post after over a year but I would like more information on Gyeongsan!
I have a teaching job in Daegu and I just found out that the housing is in Gyeongsan. At first I was very disappointed by this but I am warming up to the idea. I believe my housing is near Yeongnam University and it sounds like it is very easy to get to Daegu (just around 10-15 min bus ride right?). My school said my housing is about a 10 min bus ride from the school. So I imagine I will spend most of my day in Daegu.
What are the options for getting back to Gyeongsan late at night? My school closes at around 10 and I was hoping to have the option to enjoy the Daegu nightlife occasionally. How late do the buses typically run? Somebody mentioned a train going from Daegu to Gyeongsan at 3 am, is this correct? What about taking cabs? Is that a good option sometimes?
Any other things to do in Gyeongsan?
I hope somebody sees this post! I would have just PM'ed one of you but I don't have the 25 posts needed to do so hah..... |
