A week and a half ago I interviewed with a hagwon in southern Gangnam. Following the interview, the director asked for my contact information and put me in touch with the current teacher, whom I might replace.
Then on the same afternoon I got a strange message from the recruiter who arranged the interview, indicating that the hagwon called her and decided not to offer me the position.
A few days later, since I never called the current teacher, the director contacted me directly and asked me to call the current teacher. I spoke with the current teacher, and everything was quite fine. But later, when the recruiter I'd dealt with asked to speak with the director, her call wasn't returned.
So, the director thinks I will accept the job from them directly, thereby avoiding the recruitment commission. Not only did the director attempt to deceive the recruiter, she also lied to me when she asked for my contact information, explaining that she was not trying to (I forget her exact words) do without the recruiter.

In Taipei, hagwons usually recruit their own teachers.
In the past, I just taught in a public school to avoid this kind of BS, but how common is this, anyway? How common is it for a hagwon to use a recruiter and then circumvent them to avoid paying commission? |

| I have never personally heard of this happening before, but it's not surprising. However, who would want to work for a hagwon where they know the director is a shady piece of scum before even signing the contract? If the director is willing to screw the recruiter over, guarenteed whoever takes the job will be the next to bend over. |

This is common enough that many recruiters delete contact info from prospective teachers' resumes when submitting them to schools for review. It is also a good test of honesty. This prospective employer has failed the test. You know the director is a crook. Be greatful for the bright red flag and refuse any offer they may make. |

Well, apparently, the school has given the contact info out. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been in contact.
Why not let the recruiter sort it out? If it is a good school and the teacher has no problem, it seems foolish not to work there.
What's even more foolish is not talking with the teacher when you have a chance. |

Good point. I had included my contact information in the pdf copy of my CV, so it was a little strange that I had been asked in the first place.
How much do recruiters charge to find a teacher, anyway?
I've had a few recruiters expressly request a resume in .doc format. And I'm not new to Korea, so I realized that not everyone here is familiar with .pfd, but .doc can be easily edited. So, that's worth considering. |

So, you initially didn't call the teacher. That was my point.
If you aren't willing to work for a deceitful person, you should go back to your home country, pay your taxes, call your mom on the weekends, mow the lawn, donate to some charity, and forget working in Asia as a second rate employee.
The time to flex your vibrato left when you took the first offer to come here. Don't make yourself out to be the hypocritical laughing stock of this site. |

To come here? I took an inexpensive flight from Taiwan to come here. I used to teach in Korea, at a public school. Then I left. In what way is anything I have said hypocritical? |

So, you are saying because you paid for a cheap flight to Korea you should be given a job which amounts to ambassador privileges? I don't care how you got here. I don't care how low the fare is.
This job teaching English to Koreans is like working on a farm picking tomatoes at half minimum wage. You get 1 year to live somewhere then you are homeless.
Time to wise up boy. Get money where you can get money. You will not survive in China, and I heard the kimchi is no longer served at GEPIK lunches.

| As per the OP's question, yes, I believe it is commonplace for directors to do this. I got my last job the exact same way. The director's underling told me to tell the recruiter that I decided to go back home and not take the job. |
