When will this 'black face', denigrating black people, nonsense end? It seems to be one episode after another. The latest fried chicken advert can only be described as disgusting. Do these people want to be respected globally or do they not?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VuPa4p2TMA

Imagine how Koreans would react if a Western advert were to depict Koreans in such an unflattering light (and believe me, there is a whole lot of material out there). What if the commercial had to do with gentlemanly, polite, considerate public behavior and contrasted the behavior of Mr. Smith to one Mr. Lee, 'a resident of South Korea'. Koreans would be on the streets in an hour. But you know what, that commercial would not be made in the States, Canada, or Australia. And if it were people would be disgusted by it - and not just those of Korean ancestry. But here, no Korean seems to be bothered by such commercials. No churches, university groups, leftist parties, labor unions, human rights organizations...noone. It's just another racist commercial that shakes no feathers because it's not Koreans being depicted negatively.

And , of course, Korea's problem with race doesn't start and end with black people. We've all experienced Korean racism to some extent, not least with regard to E-2 visa regulations and 'Have you been a victim of a foreigner?' type television programs. But blacks get the worst of it, and I'm getting real tired of seeing it. It even reaches down into public school textbooks and their 'comical' depictions of black people. No wonder when a black person appears on the screen the children laugh and yell out 'Aprica, Aprica.'

It's time for Korea to grow up if it wants to be a respected member of the human family.

They look like real Africans to me, but still. This was discussed in another thread wasn't it when Steelrails compared it to the Asiana pilots' names hoax? Just the other day actually I watched a British sketch show with some Koreans in it who, surprise, surprise ended up eating dog. I don't really find any of these things personally offensive but after a while jokes like this wear a bit thin. Africans eating people seems to have gone this way in the West, though apparantly Koreans eating dog hasn't yet.

That's because the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK (why did you leave out the UK, worst offender of all?) are completely dysfunctional, so ashamed of their histories -- histories of actual, violent, oppressive, and murderous racism, not mere silly jokes -- that they can't handle those said same silly, stupid jokes, and what's worse, can't handle the notion that other people might be able to handle them. That video with the Japanese woman pretending to be white? It was stupid. Not racist, just stupid. That "Asian Girlz" video everyone is screaming about on here? It's not racist -- it doesn't make a declaration of racial superiority or inferiority -- it's just stupid. The silly pilot names jokes? The same.

Look, I know pretending to be offended by anything which references race in anything less than an absolutely positive light -- hell, you people even feign offense at fricking factual statistics! -- is an easy way to status seek and pretend to be a "good person" without actually having to do anything or sacrifice anything, but come on. I seriously can't belive you people -- people whose governments spend citizen tax dollars on bombing innocent people and inciting violent revolutions in underdeveloped countries -- feel like this is the issue on which you need to take a stand. "Oh dear, someone might be offended by the viewing of this video, and they very well may wet themselves! And the children, they giggle! It must be stopped, and I'll do my part by posting about it. I'm such a good person."

Which is precisely how it should be. Wanting people to be upset by this kind of silliness is dysfunctional. It's a stupid, banal commercial.

Quite the opposite, Korea need merely bide its time and wait for race-anxiety culture to implode in the West. And make no mistake, that's going to happen; people will only tolerate being coerced into falsely professing shame for so long; only accept so much of HR departments and tenured race "studies" university professors telling them all whites are automatically racists, non-whites cannot ever be racist (which of course really just means Blacks; East Asians, being generally prosperous, receive no shielding under "prejudice + power" formulations), and that they need to fully internalize and regularly profess these beliefs. The further the West travels in time from its world-conquering, third-world-exploiting, African-enslaving past, the more its young denizens will (rightly) begin to realize that they are in no way responsible for those events and need feel no shame regarding them, at which point the entire race-anxiety complex will collapse to the ground.

But yes, I've said this all before, and the average poster here has responded, "Sorry, we'll stick with our pants-wetting anxiety," so it's probably a lost cause. The false sense of morality that feigning offense over a stupid chicken commercial grants is evidently too appealing to be overcome. You're just all such good people, and old man Fox is just oh so terrible.

Do you have anything to back that lovely little statement up? Worst offender of all? I think all those countries are as bad as each other but the US and the UK are tied for worst of the bunch.

Incidents like this are what give me that impression, but perhaps you're right that it's neither fair nor really even profitable for me to single them out. I was more shocked at their omission than anything.

We can find plenty of instances of casual and institutional racism in both the states and the UK, if we go down that route - this instance in Australia would never ever be allowed in the UK. But you are right - the UK shouldn't have been omitted from the list even though I agree with what Scorpion is saying with the rest of his post.

This comment on the video was pretty good:

As a person of primarily Asian descent, I resent the offensive stereotype that we can magically conjure fried chicken out of thin air.

Korea will NEVER be a first world country until it gets rid of its racism and double standards.

The sad thing is the Olympics are coming up. And I can guarantee unless there's a government campaign to curb all of the racism before the games (which there won't be) this country is going to get torn to shreds by Indian, African, Arab, and all other kinds of news networks for the racism their citizens display in public.

To be fair a lot of Koreans love white people. Blonde hair blue eyes is at the top of the totem pole. Random pictures with the locals, girls lining up at the clubs to date you, locals chatting you up in public, et al. But a Filipino, Indian, Black person? Forget it. It's almost as if Koreans consider certain nationalities "upper tier" whereas other "darker" nationalities are a downgrade, garbage tier. It's revolting.

And as for the men and sexism here, it's off the charts. If a Korean girl dates a white guy, she's a s*ut, race traitor, et al. But if a Korean guy dates a white girl, good for him, props, thumbs up, et al.

This place will never be on the level of the West until they fix their third world racist and sexist attitudes.

Which will, of course, be totally justified as those countries are incapable of showing any kind of racism whatsoever, right?

I think you over-estimate Korea's desire to be on the level of the West in this regard.

people are so sensitive these days. How about I just shoot the next person who claims to have their wittle feelings hurt to put them out of their misery. Because you will NEVER stamp out "racism" or jokes made on stereotypes.

Where do I even start? This post is riddled with unsubstantiated rants with little supporting evidence. Could you please find something more recent and reliable to validate your claims?

Care to list the countries that HAVE gotten rid of their racism and double standards?

Right, because that totally happened during the 2002 World Cup and 1988 Olympics.

And invade other countries, start wars for oil, and blow up a bunch of brown-skinned civilians.
