Here's my situation. I would appreciate some advice and/or other perspectives. I have been offered a much better job of the type I've been working towards for the last couple of years. Needless to say, I really want this job! However, taking it means breaking my current contract.
I have handed in my 30 day resignation letter as required by my contract. However, my end date falls in the middle of a session.
My new contract (unsigned as of yet) begins a week later.
My current employer categorically refuses to give me an LOR if I quit mid-session. My supervisor has stated that the director MAY give me an LOR if I agree to finish 2 weeks later at the end of the session.
He has said that without the LOR I will NOT be able to accept a new job in Korea until my current visa expires in January. From doing a little research, that seems to be the case. So, it seems I have 2 options:
1. Ask my employer-to-be to delay my start date by 2 weeks. If they do agree to delay my starting date AND my current employer provides an LOR, the crisis is diverted. A delayed start date seems unlikely given their semester schedules, but I may be wrong.
2. If employer-to-be does not agree to delay my start date, my current employer won't provide an LOR and I'll be unable to work anywhere but there until my current visa expires in January.
~~My current employer would allow me to finish my contract, but I can't imagine those remaining months will be comfortable or cooperative. I can deal with this if I have to, but would rather not.
My research suggests that without that LOR, I'm basically stuck at my current job and cannot accept the new position. Am I reading the situation correctly?
Are there any possibilities/options I'm not seeing? |

Is it true that the visa run option no longer works? I can't, for example, wander off to Japan after handing in my ARC at the airport and come back with an E-1?
It seems like the LOR is really a cudgel to keep people in jobs they no longer want for whatever reason. *sigh* |

^^. The problem will be with immigration. More than likely ( as has happened to several of my friends this year) they will flag your visa as having broken a contract.) They have been denying E-1 visas as of late to people who broke contract to get university position.
Even with release letters ALL of my friends were denied. This was after they had quit their jobs!
A couple of years ago this wouldn't have been a problem.
Now they are making teachers wait until their original contract expiration date before releasing them/giving new visas.

^^,This. But also could you imagine the mayhem if suddenly hundreds of people just up and quit when/if a better job came along.
I don't know if this country could handle that chaos! |

Ok. Thank you for the information. I was pretty sure I was reading the situation correctly, but I've been wrong before. |
