Hi everyone,
I've been trying to do my best in preparing to teach in South Korea for a year, but one aspect has always concerned me.
How much money do I need to save in order to buy my round trip flight ticket and have enough for the first month I'm there? I'm assuming I won't get paid until the end of the first month, and even then, it may not be be on time.
Any help on budgeting and recommended savings amount would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Take as much as you possibly can manage. You need enough for any kind curve that gets thrown at you. The last thing you need or want is to be stuck in a bad situation because you didn't have enough money.
I saw a few people go to Korea expecting to live paycheck to paycheck. Very hard life. Save save save. Korea = nickel and dime you to death. |

If you are going to a public school then $1000 plus airfare to Korea is adequate.
IF you are going to a hagwon then $1500 plus a two way ticket (or cash equivalent) is advisable.
Better yet, DON'T take a hagwon job where they don't prepay the air ticket in or you may be the next one faced with, "help, job canceled the day before I fly" because they have no vested or financial interest in you and a cheaper Charlie on hand saves them the airfare and leaves you in the lurch.

...and the best way to go about living from paycheck to paycheck is to follow the crowd and start hanging out in bars. |
