I've been here about two weeks, and no one has told me to get a health check. I asked my co-teacher about a health check, and she thought I meant I wanted to see a doctor for a check-up and started telling me about the best doctors. I clarified that it is in my contract, and she said it wasn't required. I then told her my recruiter said I had to have one, and she came back and said I could get a check up after I got my ARC. I think she is still talking about a check-up for me personally, and not the health check for the E2. What gives? I thought this was required by immi. I'm in a public school with an EPIK contract.

It is required and your co-teacher is uninformed.

Ok. Thanks. I'll do that. If I have to do it, I want to get it over with.

I was under the impression that the medical check was required by immi for the ARC. They didn't need a health check to issue my ARC. They already did that without it. Is the health check for insurance purposes, or is it needed by immigration for something?

The health check and digital fingerprints are required by immi before your ARC is processed.

You must apply for your ARC in person. It can't be "done for you" by another person.

Ironically, about 10 years ago the local media and politicians were calling Japan all kinds of nasty names for requiring the same of Koreans who were residing in the country.

Please answer. Do you actually have the ARC in your hand or did you only apply for it?
I'm really curious about this since the degree ,background check, and health check are vital for employment in this country.

If you only applied, chances are they will flag it as incomplete or reject it all together.

Oh. No, I don't have it in hand. My co-teacher went with me to apply, and all I did was fill out a form, and they scanned my passport. This was in Daejeon two weeks ago. My co-teacher told me the ARC would arrive at the school this upcoming week. I thought it was too easy. I'm confused as to how they wouldn't know the process. It isn't like I'm the first native teacher the school had to go through this process with. And why in the world would Daejeon immi not get everything they needed from me? Ugh....

Edit: They took my fingerprints, also, but no health check.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that for me. Please post here when/if your ARC arrives at your school.

It is very possible that your co- teacher was right.
I checked around and found a teacher who got the ARC and then the health check. She said her public school told her she needed to get one within 30 days because the Department of Education definitely requires one. Usually they check your paper work within a month and then notify the principal if anything is missing. The principal tells your co-teacher, your co-teacher tells you.

BTW: There are specific hospitals that are APPROVED to do the health check.Usually you have to go and do this on your own. It cost between 70,0000-100,000 won.


To answer your question about immigrations:
There is no one set of rules that are adhered to religiously here by immigrations. It just all depends on the days, the worker, how you look, etc. as to what they will tell you. I have used several offices over the years and every person interpreted the rules in their own way.
