I need some advice on how to find a job teaching English after arriving IN Seoul.
I was hired by a school, signed a contract, and had just submitted my visa confirmation number. Then the school said they were unable to hire me because not enough students signed up for the year.
The director said she felt bad and would still sponsor my visa and transfer it once I find another job, so at least I am going to Korea with and have a place to stay.
Does ANYONE have advice about job hunting IN korea? I have enough money to stay afloat for a couple of months, but I do not know what steps to take since I will not be working with recruiters from home? If you have any contacts, knowledge of schools, or general advice PLEASE contact me I would really appreciate it. |

Assuming that your visa can be transferred, you should have no trouble landing a new job. Contact several recruiters and post your resume on Dave's. You'll get a variety of offers if you are available immediately and open to all of Korea. |

It's easier to find a job in Korea if you're in Korea. Employers can save on airfare and feel more comfortable hiring someone they've met face to face. I don't know if you can transfer your visa before you obtain your alien registration card. You may need to get that first. You'll also need to get a letter of release from the school that decided not to hire you. |

You can actually get some better positions (notably afterschool) being here. Post resumes and do some legwork |

If you're not actually employed, then how is she giving you your E2? Surely you'd have to go about getting a D10 visa yourself? |

Yes, I am in a terrible place. New job, new location, great apartment. The school is helping me with computer problems when they don't need to.
Anyway, coming to this site means my life elsewhere has to suck? Interesting logic. |

Another good reason to NOT pay for your own ticket on the promise of getting reimbursed later when you are headed to a hagwon.

Silly. The OP's school or any school can cancel a ticket before the teacher departs if financial circumstances prevent them from hiring a teacher they had planned to hire. The OP is lucky to have the offer of assistance to find another position.
As for paying for your own ticket and with reimbursement after arrival - this is the only way you will get hired to work at many of the best schools. They will offer you a contract that stipulates they will reimburse at a specific time shortly after arrival. If you turn down the contract or you sign and try to finagle a prepaid ticket, you'll lose out on the best jobs. Government schools are the same. If you are not grown up enough to handle your own flight arrangements with a reimbursed ticket, you are not ready to teach ESL for a year or more in a foreign country. |

BULL..... just another example of screwed at the gate by your average hagwon in Korea.
They have no financial risk and no sense of responsibility so they could care less. Typical hagwon crap.
And when the OP arrives in Korea, even with the offer of a "transfer" he is still out the value of his airfare.

Yea ttompatz is spot on here. These NOOBS that keep agreeing to reimbursed airfare are just making the market WORSE for everyone else. Thats why theres so many LOWBALL offers of 2.1 with no prepaid airfare. As long as NOOBS like the OP keep signing the dotted line nothing will change.
Ive said it before tons of times STOP AGREEING TO REIMBURSED AIRFARE NOOBS. Youre just setting yourself up for disaster.
For everyone ONE that gets reimbursed theres 100 that either got a fraction of their money or NONE of it back. And that "all the best schools dont offer prepaid airfare " is BS. |

If a noob doesn't do this, then a rookie already in Korea or another noob could take the job for lack of one back home. Sure, if you have a steady job now back home and you just want to experience Korea, make your demands and wait till you get what you want (in this case airfare prepaid). However, most people coming to Asia to teach are doing so because they can't find a job back home. Six months or so looking for one, cash running out.....it doesn't seem like much to pay 1,000 USD to come to Korea and then get back on your feet.
Even if you are screwed, you could use that school as a stepping stone to a new school.

For every month you continue to search for a job, you pay about 500 USD in rent. You might have to have a car, pay bills, attend to family obligations, etc...
A plane ticket alone is not enough to stop you. There has to be other signs, much worse signs to turn down an offer.
You could turn this around and say that 1 job might not give you airfare, but your 3rd or 4th school should. I paid my airfare without disputing it, then one school knew I wasn't going to go home but they gave me airfare money anyway.
I think this is a stronger fight to be a part of. We don't know who the noobs are. We don't want them making a bad name for the good rookies who deserve certain benefits. So, instead of declining contracts which don't include airfare for first time teachers, you should decline them while in Korea (in your second year or later).
Anyway, if it comes down to it I would rather be a noob and get 100,000 more per month than worry about 1,200,000 before 1 month of teaching (basically the reimbursement). This way you get 100,00 back for each month you teach. If you complete the year, then the airfare has been reimbursed. This is a fairer measure and one that should be placed on noobs before they come to Korea or another country. |
