Hi all,

I am sure this has been brought up before (as have many topics!) but can someone please advise on the degree/notary/apostille process for the UK? I am planning on applying to teach in Korea in Sept 2014 and have been in touch with Alistair@Korean Horizons. I just want to be organised with docs in advance. Korean Horizions state below:

For these positions you will need to provide the following:

1.Application form (EPIK) (Chungnam) (Gyungnam) (Incheon).

2.Scan of your passport.

3.Scan of your Bachelor diploma.

4.Scan of 2 professional or educational references

These are the recruitment requirements of the Ministry of Labor.

A phone interview may be arranged with you and the supervisor from the office of education.

All information will be provided to you.

This is all fine. If successful in interview, next stage is:

1.Notarized copy of your Bachelor with an apostille (Canadian citizens need it to be validated by the nearest Korean consulate.)

2.Two university transcripts in sealed university envelopes.

3.Two original recommendation letters, on letterheaded paper, with contact details, dated & signed.

4.Criminal background check for your entire country, notarized with an apostille (Canadian citizens need it to be validated by their consulate.)

My questions are:

- Where can I get a copy of my degree? Can it just be a photocopy or does it need to be copied from somewhere official?
- I then need an apostille on the copy I believe. Anyone know the best place to get this done and prices...? And could I get them this far in advance?
- The above also applies for the criminal record.

Transcripts won't be a problem and I'm *hoping the ref letters will be ok too...

Thanks in advance all.

I have just found another thread on this here:

But if anyone has any advice they'd like to add, I'd really appreciate it Smile

Photocopy degree, have it notarized (actually its 'certified' by notarized seems to be the current nomenclature: In the UK a notary is actually pretty expensive - about 80 quid, whilst certification will set you back a whopping 5-10 quid). Its basically just a stamp certifying that the solicitor certifies that the copy is a genuine copy. So in answer to number 1, just bring the original in with your copy to the solicitor and theyll stamp and sign it.

Then head to the foreign office online site, print and fill out the application for the apostille. Pay for your service. Get that number, put it on the application in the spot, then pop this. the application, and the certified docs in a letter and voila! done.

Its only difficult IF AND ONLY IF you cant get the notary. If you have the notary though (you can always send it to a mate in the uk if you arent there and ask them to pop to some solicitors and do it for you), its easy peasy.

For the CRC, if you write to disclosure scotland a wee letter stating the necessity for it to be notarised, it should come back to you without any issues. Again, easy peasy.

One more thing you need to bear in mind is the date on your CRC. If I remember correctly it needs to be dated within 6 months of your contract start date. If you apply for it now, it will be outdated by the time you come to apply for positions in September next year.

Thanks very much for this info. Would it be here where I'd get the actual apostille: https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised
£30 per doc it says. Does this sound about right?

I couldn't see a space for the payment service in the app form? But I did see a space for a 9-digit payment number; I don't know what this is, but I suppose I could ask for details from the website itself.

Thanks again and please pm me if easier to explain!
