Usually just as easy (or easier) to get it in HK.
http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/passenger/arrival/t1/visa-tourism-info/china-travel-service.html

Takes about 6 hours.

These are available from either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or China Travel Service (CTS).

Post on how it goes with getting a Chinese visa in Hong Kong. My wife(Chinese) told me it is getting harder to get a Chinese visa in Hong KOng.

Its pretty straight foward. You can go through any number of agencies. Nost hostels/hotels will take care of it for you.

I used some place near East Tsim Sha Tsui station.
You fill out forms, provide a passport photo and over your cash.
Depnding on how fast you want it the costs are different.
Same day- cant remember
Next day - $650 hk
2-3 days -350

Think is more expensive for Americans, which i'm not.

The point is, it is super simple and quick.

Just to confirm this again... I am an American and I will have less than 6 months remaining on my ARC, is this a problem? Should I just book a ticket to Hong Kong without getting any sort of visa?

Less than 6 months on your ARC at the time of your visa application then just go to Hing Kong.

More than 6 months at the time of your application and you can get it here (regardless of how long is on your ARC when you travel).

So... can you book plane tickets before getting your visa? I would rather not arrive at Hong Kong, wait for my visa, and then buy plane tickets to Beijing the day of.....

yes.

Or just cross the frontier after you get your visa and get a cheap set of domestic tickets in Shenzhen (SZX) or Guangzhou (CAN).

Would it be a better idea to mail my passport back home (usa) and get it that way? Can you even do that with less than 6 months on your ARC?

Yes, you can and yes, you can

BUT

a) you will be without your passport for a while

b) they won't mail/courier it out of the country so you will need to have it sent to a US address and then re-posted (courier) to you here in Korea.

hmm... do you have a recommendation? Hong Kong or mail? Not sure which way to go... if both will work though I suppose either one is okay with me
