Just got to Korea. Been up for over 48 hours. Dying for some sleep. Problem? My apartment doesn't have a bed.. or chair.. or any sort of furnishing for that matter. There is a really thin mat, but that's it. I'm working for a public school. Do I say something? I went to look for a thicker mat tonight, but all I can find costs 400,000! Just for a mat. I'm thinking a bigger city will have something cheaper, but the school said they would provide it. Should I say something to them?

Yes, you should say something immediately. If not, they make think you are content to live like a Korean!

My public school actually put me up in a (H)otel, until my new queen bed arrived. I ,too, arrived at my apartment to a simple blanket. I immediately indicated that I could not under any circumstance stay there until it was completely furnished. They sprung into action ordering all sorts of new wonderful items. Yes, they put me up in an actual hotel with a western buffet breakfast.

LOL at you for signing up to work for a garbage job half way around the world to be put into a concentration camp style cramped house sleeping on jail mats.

Wow you must be ALL that if they "sprang" into action at the drop of a hat for you. Who did you say you were again? Oh yeah, an expendable, dime a dozen English speaker with no real trade except for your mother tongue? ROFL. Delusional people, I swear, with inflated egos to boot. You're lucky they even gave you a job, bub.

You should have refused to stay there from the first day. They should put you in some kind of hotel with A/C and a bed until they get your apartment ready.

There was a hint of sacrasm in his post. But, I guess your inflated ego blinded you to that, and you reverted to your full-time job as being a clueless internet troll.

Walk into school with a little limp. When your CT or someone asks you if you are okay, explain to them that it's because you've been sleeping on the floor.

Being a weak foreigner, you are worried that you're doing permanent damage to your back. Then hobble off to your next class.

If your contract says you get a bed, a bed must be provided. BTW, I have never met a Korean who sleeps on the floor. They sleep in beds too. Maybe a couple of 80 year old grandmas don't, but I assume you're not an 80 year old grandma.

Pipe up son; the squeky wheel gets the grease.

Sounds like you've rarely slept wit' Koreans. Laughing Come to my goshiwon and have a look at all the beds they've tossed out of the rooms. Cool

Sleeping on the floor is handy in winter.

Nice and warm from the underfloor heating!

A bed is in your contract. Make them get you a bed. Should be able to get one bought and moved to your house within an hour of getting off of work. No big deal.

Most modern Koreans with apartments sleep in beds, I mean. Though some may get those stone beds. Mostly it's still old people who sleep on the floor.

Lots of Koreans sleep on mats on the floor. I survey my students: almost half. Its good for your back, really comfy in winter, & I do it myself. I have a school-provided proper bed I've never used in my extra room.

But the OP's situation was egregious. Nothing provided. He should have been put up elsewhere till his apartment got furnished.

OP, update?

They are going to bring me a bed the day after tomorrow. They were very nice about it.
