Back when I first moved to Korea my co-teacher easily got internet at her place from unsecured networks in her building. But for a year I paid for wired service. It wasn't expensive, but not that cheap either. I've since moved to another school and residence, and other North Americans in my building are able to use unsecured wifi connections in the vicinity.

My computer is somewhat old (2006).

Is there a way to boost your potential to receive a connection from a more distant router or simply to receive a stronger signal? If so, what is it?

Get a USB wifi, not the cheapest one and get a USB extension of 3 or 5 meters.

This is not helpful at all.

What you need to do, is take some tinfoil and twist into a shape, something similar to a pretzel. Then, take some scissors and cut 3 slits into each end of your pretzel foil wrap. Leave it on the side for 2 hours but make sure it is nowhere near the microwave. This will mess up the ability for it to reach a signal.

After 2 hours is up, take the left-hand end of your pretzel-foil wrap and rest it no more than 2 inches away from the wireless card of your computer (you may need to open your computer to find this if you don't already know where it is, use the peen of a hammer to do that if necessary).

The other end of the pretzel foil wrap needs to be rested between two erasers. Used or new is fine. Then, fire up your computer and you're good to go!

I "borrowed" someone's wifi for 2 weeks until I got my own internet installed a couple of years ago and got a bad virus. Had to wipe and re-install the hard drive. I recommend getting a good anti-virus program and your own (password protected) internet connection
