"'Male-free' zones ignite uproar"
http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/culture/2013/09/399_142207.html

I can't decide how I feel about this kind of thing. On the one hand, a lot of Korean women do seem to feel vulnerable, so I understand why some of them would want segregated parking spots, lounges, and so on, especially when there seems to be so much voyeurism (seem to be so much voyeurism? Maybe it's just the media blowing things out of proportion; I seem to read articles every other day about perverts using cameras in illegal ways).

On the other hand, these kinds of measures may cement the perception that women are inherently weak and can never measure up. I can also understand how the men quoted in that article feel that it's off-putting to be considered a potential sex criminal just because they're male.

For a personal and down right selfish reason, the more "men" who feel discriminated against, the more the society MAY be willing to fight discrimination in ALL forms.

I found this part especially interesting.

The idea of having a safe bus ride is good. But having a bus which men are banned from, is tantamount to criminalizing all men and viewing them as potential sex criminals,” said Kang Hyun-chul. β€œIt reminds me of the old-time black-white segregation of the South Africa. It is very insulting.”

Sounds pretty similar to what many ESL people face with HIV tests, the media circus that erupts every time some douche behaves badly...etc.

Private businesses can do what they want, but the government should not be perpetuating the stereotype of the sex-crazed male. You want to keep women safe? Get real police and stricter punishments.

As a guy with a smoking hot girlfriend, I can see where the women are coming from. There are a lot of perverted, beta losers in Asia compared to my home country. Ive had some close calls with some creepers here. Back home youd get a guy glaring at your girl once in a while, nothing serious.

My girlfriends friend also caught some creep taping up her skirt. At the police station he was ordered to pay her millions of won or face jail time. Something about the culture here that breeds nothing but betas. Those opposed to this obviously dont have any female friends, that or all their female friends are fat and at the bottom of the barrel.

YOU are the very definition of "beta" (and stop stealing my words btw) and your girl is anything but hot. Probably fat or ugly or a combination of both.

The male rights movement is gathering steam in Korea. They want to stay top dog, but that's tough to do when women have economic power and the freedom that comes with it.

Until, as someone posted above, the police do their FCCKNG job, then Korean women will need this type of protection. On the face of it, reserved seats for women in a library seems absurd, but then they state there have been numerous complaints from female student about male harassment.

So Korean men can learn to behave themselves and demand that the guilty be punished as a deterrent or accept that women need special areas where they will not be and feel threatened by Korean men.

Dodge7, weve already seen what you AND your wife look like since you posted your ugly face for all to see so youre not exactly one to talk. Your wife isnt anything I havent seen on the train during my daily commute. With a pound of makeup caked onto her face in that picture, maybe Id consider her if I was drunk enough. Keep trying. Like everyone else youll lose every time, the times I do actually bother to respond.

Btw... lol @ saying thats an Armani suit and no one believing you. Cheap rags you bought off of Homeplus looks like the buttons about to burst from your fatarse. Laughing

Yes, because being a Korean man is EXACTLY like being a black slave in the South. Seriously, WTF. Korean guys need to get over themselves. Maybe they need to think about the kind of culture that makes Korean women feel like they need their own space to feel safe.

Although the bus seems to be taking it too far. I've never felt unsafe on a bus. It's usually the packed subway trains where the pervs try to cop a feel.

The root of the problem is proximity.

By allowing oneself to be in a close range situation with people of all walks of life. If you could somehow insulate yourself from these types of situations whenever possible, make it very difficult for the average person on the street access to you and your family (gf) whatever - then you'd have a much better experience. That would mean private transportation above all.

Make more money! Very Happy

The only one that bothers me is the women's parking spaces. Well bothers isn't right, I'm jealous of them. Those and the handicapped spaces are the only decent-sized parking spaces in the country. I'm trying to squeeze my car into regular/tiny parking spaces, and I see mini-cars' parked in the large "womens only" spaces.

For those of you without the experience of parking in Korea, it's like getting your ass into those small subway seats (I need 1.5 and I'm not fat.)

If you need 1.5 of a subway seat youre definitely overweight. Im looking at the seats right now and every guy can fit into one, and theyre not all thin guys. Hell my dad fits in 1 subway seat and hes ... lets say "American size"

If it's a private institution they have the right to have women only areas. But I don't like it for the reasons already mentioned. Men aren't all prone to sexual molestation. I'm not gonna grab a random girl's ass just because she's in the same bus as me. It also only attempts to solve the symptom rather than the problem. Why not give out harsher punishments to sex offenders from the get go instead of trying to "protect" women with these half ass measures? If you can't stop yourself from grabbing random women's butts, you shouldn't be out in society.

I work for a National university where there are male-free zones. It is a non-issue as there are plenty of places on and off the campus for the men to socialize when they want to. Somehow the perception of being discriminated against affects people who feel they are being restricted in some way by not having the privilege of access into certain places. However, I don't see anyone jumping up and down about that fact that we have toilets and other bathroom facilities marked specifically for males and females. Honestly, the people who feel a sense of "entitlement" as it relates to where they can or cannot gain access and entrance to certain places is somewhat childish IMHO.
