Sup fellas

I'm completing a BEd right now in Ontario, Canada and looking towards doing a Masters in Education next year. Ideally in toronto.

I have a couple of questions

1. Does any MEd allow you to work in a Korean University teaching english? For example, Toronto offers MEd in Counseling psychology, language and literacies education, master of teach primary and secondary, educational administration etc.

The link is right here:
http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/oise/Prospective_Students/Graduate_Studies.html

I've seen a couple of Uni teachers who have an MBA and teach English so I was just curious.

2. Would you recommend coming to Korea to work in an International school while completing a distance or online masters in education? Or should I stick to Brick and Mortar masters while I work in Canada.

A lot of my motivation of coming to Korea is to continue learning the language. I want to become fluent and spend some time living and communicating with the natives.

Thanks ladies and gents

A certified teacher working in EFL in Asia is akin to an MBA working the front counter at McD's.

Get off of the EFL boards and into Teacher forums.
International schools pay about double, have significantly better benefit packages and give you a global reach for employment opportunities.

Korean (or just about any other country's) EFL is a career graveyard for certified teachers.

Thank you for the response.

I am quite aware of what you've just told me and I am appreciate of the wake-up call. However my question still remains unanswered. I am doing a masters no matter the circumstances and if I can have a duel-edged sword by it enabling me to work in a Korean university teaching English then I'll take it. I would love to experience that as well as working in high schools teaching my major subjects.

So if there are any other opinions then please let me know.

If you're looking for long-term financial up-side and think that teaching over the very long term may not be for you, go with the educational administration degree. If you want long-term stability in Korea at a university, go with a degree related to teaching language, in your case I guess that would be the language and literacies education. If you want a nice little side line while here in Korea, go for the counseling psychology and set up shop to hear the woes of the expat crowd (there are at least a few people doing that over here now).

Totally up to you. ANY M.Ed will trump any other MA not related to education when applying for university positions. At some of the more selective top tiered universities, however, they're looking specifically for MAs in TESOL. Mind you, though, that some of the top universities aren't necessarily the best places to work long-term any more.

I do generally applaud people who try to do some long-term, forward planning. Having said that, any of those M.ed degrees should do the trick if you want to work here in Korea. Do what you feel is right for you and study something that you're interested in. The rest will sort itself out.

One more thing to note. Many of the best qualified people working in TESOL here didn't quit improving their credentials with their MAs. Many have taken their CELTA and DELTA certifications, and some are even qualified to teach those programs. There are many ways to get involved in the academic community and to increase the breadth of your skill set once you get in and get settled.
