DO NOT accept a job from this small, one off hagwon. The owners are a shady, miserable, micromanaging couple who are very manipulative. They sacked another foreign teacher and I for bullshit made-up reasons. I was told that if I wanted my release letter, I would not only have to repay the airfare in full, but I would have to pay a 500,000 won recruiter’s fee. The latter was not stated on my contract and it became clear to me that my employers were going to hold my release letter hostage for money.

On top of that, the hagwon claims much less than our actual salary. A portion of it comes from the school and is properly taxed, while the rest comes from a personal account. They stole half of my pension.

My coworker left the country, unfortunately, and did nothing to protect herself. I, on the other hand, couldn't afford to do nothing or sit around and wait for a release letter that may or may not come. I went to the labour board and got my freedom and didn't have to pay their bullshit fees.

Don't accept a job from this hagwon.
