the opportunity to work in a stronger economy remains irresistible for workers such as Hariprasad Gautam, who arrived from Nepal in 2011 to take up a factory job in Ansan. “In Nepal I would earn $200 a month, but here it is $2,000,” says Mr Gautam, 41, who sends 85 per cent of his income home to support his wife and twin daughters. |
2.2 mil a month sounds pretty good. Does he get free housing too? I'm thinking maybe he does, because otherwise how could he possibly send 85% of his income to his wife and kids. That only leaves 10,000 per day for himself. (Does he get some free meals from the workplace?) Not a bad deal. I can see why some third world laborers would be willing to leave their friends and families to come here to work.

I've seen some job flyers in the Chinese areas of Seoul, offering 2-3.5million to work at a factory, meals and room included. This is working almost 60-80hrs a week though, rooms and meals probably aren't that great also. |

Are you sure it's that many hours per week? I'm doing some searching and am finding figures a lot lower than that. But I'm not exactly sure. Anyone else have an estimate?

Korean labor law defines normal working hours as 40 hours per week and 8 hours per day. |
Factories are breaking the law? |

You really think people are working only 40hrs a week in Korea? My friend works for a US music label here and he probably works 70hrs a week. |

I know a couple of Korean and Philippine factory workers. They are working 12 hour days and 6 days a week. 72 hours per week. The factory serves them a free breakfast and a free lunch every day. They are paid by the hour. Their housing isn't paid for by the factory. I don't know their exact pay. The pay depends on how long they have been there and their position in the factory. I don't remember exactly, but I think one of the Korean workers was/is making around 2.5million, about 1.5 years at the job. One of the Philippine workers was/is making around 2.1 million, about 6 months at the job. |

Their job is producing and dying material/ cloth. I was talking to the Korean worker back in July and he said the factory didn't have air-conditioning and was extremely hot inside. He said the odor from the chemicals and dye was harsh too. |

It sounds like a cool job and something I would do if I were being fairly compensated. Any idea how much he makes? Does he get placement credits and royalties? What is his job exactly? Song writer? (Your friend is Korean?) |

In their home towns 50,000 USD probably buys a house. |

That's why it's a great deal for them. They can save money and then live like kings in their home countries with the money they saved. The cost of living is so low all over South East Asia. |

I'm not sure about Korean labor law, however in the States there's a difference between exempt (blue collar) and non-exempt (white collar) workers which makes a difference. If you are a non-exempt worker then labor laws and overtime don't apply to you ie, number of hours worked per week. If you're an exempt worker then upwards of 40 hrs a week you must be getting at least 1.5 per hour more and other such things come into play. This is in the US though. I don't know specifically about Korea's labor laws however. |
