How do you do it?

Do you just put on a shirt and tie and pound the pavement like you would back home?

I've tried looking here on Dave's, English Spectrum and the WorkNPlay websites. Most posts seem to be made by recruiters. I'd like to negotiate something myself but I'm not sure how to do it. Wandering around Seoul stopping in at random English hagwons seems a little inefficient.

Suggestions?

I've had a lot of luck applying through Dave's directly to schools (you just have to sift through all the recruiter posts to find the school posts). Other options: keep an eye out for people on here who say they're leaving their jobs, as they might be good jobs that will need a replacement teacher. Or, post your resume on Daves, eslteachersboard, etc and you'll probably just start getting offers. You'll be contacted by a lot of recruiters that way too, but you can ignore them and just respond to the actual direct job offers.

Good luck!

I've done it. However, I was in Korea on an F-class visa and was looking for only short term employment. Because I knew that I was planning to be at a particular hagwon for only a month, I really didn't care about a lot of the things that will concern you.

Since you're in Seoul, make sure to look in the classifieds sections of the Korea Times and Korea Herald. I'm not saying they're great sources, but you have to keep all your options open, right?

I honestly think the majority of Hogwons out there do not want to deal with a recruiter either.

Funny how they have squeezed themselves into the industry.

Post your resume` with a notice of "no recruiters please" and see what you get.

Good advice. Also, make the title something like, "Already In Korea" or "In Seoul, willing to relocate."

Actually, most prefer it. In business, Koreans like having 3rd party buffers to share trust and responsibility on things. It's part of their collectivism. You see it especially in their old practice of their huge matchmaking industry. Korean families approaching matchmakers to help them find suitable spouses for their sons/daughters. The recruiter's role is the same. Except that the matchmaker is held accountable beyond a 1 yr contract.

I've seen some Korean divorces after a few years of marriage, and the families come down hard on the matchmaker that brokered the introduction and who received a commission upon marriage.

It's about sharing trust and responsibility in a larger circle, as Koreans are used to thinking and operating with a collective mentality, as opposed to our individualistic approachs.

If Korean directors didn't want it that way, then my recruiting business wouldn't be getting the daily emails and phonecalls from directors, asking us to find teachers for them.

Chronic, I really like your posts and often agree with your insights, however I think when it comes to "recruiters" your a bit biased Wink

Honestly man, I cast no aspersions on your business (and wish you all the luck with it) but far too many agencies simply "take one e-mail and forward it to another". IMO theres room for the service but it is inundated with half wits and half hazard attempts.

*as a side note my hogwon refuses to use recruiters and wishes to contact individual teachers directly. As well it would take an act of the All Mighty to have me use one (just so ya know where i stand). Very Happy

You might be interested in the similar topic I raised (basicly the same question as the OP):
Elephant pregnancy=22 months. Human=9. ESL job=?

Basicly I managed to find my job after spamming EVERY half decent job on daves, ESL Hub, ESL undeground, English spectrum etc etc...

Eventually I got contacted by a school and have signed on the dotted line. I think I was pretty lucky though as the other prospective teachers staying in my hostel have taken longer. Then again, I am pretty damn great... Wink
