Overburning (more than the standard 650 MB or so) requires three things

1 - A blank CDR that has a larger capacity (obviously)
2 - Software that will allow you to overburn
3 - A CD burner that actually allows overburning (critical)

Trying to overburn without proper hardware can destroy your hardware

In Nero did you go to the options menu and tell it to allow overburning ? By default this setting is off and you must enable it

Try that and/or give details on your CD burner

Nero...go to "Preferences" then "Expert Features" and change the time limits...I think a 700MB is 80 min, an 800 is 90 min...so, it should look like 90 0 0 in all the 3 fields.

snufalufagus is of course right on...you can really fry something if your burner doesn't support overburning, but to be honest, most newer CD/RWs support it no probs.

Nero has a checking utility anyways...

Click Recorder > Choose Recorder...Click on your CD Recording Device from the list.

Verify Overburn is Supported.

Click the OK button.

Burn away!! Very Happy

Yes, I enabled overburn and extended the time limit and yes my burner is capable of overburning.

I also used the speed toolkit to check it out and everthing looked good in the test, but when I initiate burn, Nero spits out my CD and asks for one with a bigger capacity.

Nero is 5.5 version.

Checked out the medium information and Nero says my in fact 870MB disk has a maximum capacity of 703MB.I get a feeling my version can't read this large CDR so I'll look for version 6 and tell you what I find.

How big is the file you want to burn? Did you change the time in the "Expert Features" to reflect this accurately? A 900MB CD will have longer times...

Also, Korea is notorious for selling crappy media...I have had many DVDs that won't burn...Nero gives an altogether different message, not related to the media at all. Took me a while to figure outthat my lousy media was actually the problem for a seemingly non-media related error everytime. Try to buy reasonably good (a bit more expensive, brand-name) media. I have never had a problem with packaged media, only the bulk.

Very possible the media you have isn't really 900MB, or is just so cheap, it won't work.

I also had a problem in Nero trying to burn a very large file with my DVD-RW....I had to burn it in "UDF" ( Universal Disk Format )mode....you may want to try this. I was trying to burn one large video file and had to go with UDF.

Try splitting the file, if all else fails.

Master spliter is a good utility:

Successful burn!!!

It wasn't the Version(all versions 5 and above support overburning). It wasn't a bad CDR.It wasn't the firmware for my drive.But...it was most likely write method that wasn't correctly selected right before the point of burn command.I also disabled multisession. Thanks for those who tried to point me in the right direction. Smile

Here on Nero's site:

Quote:
13. Can I use the Overburning feature with my CD Recorder ?

Your CD Recorder must support the over burning feature. The Recorder must support this type of media as well. Some recorders support 80min media but will not support 90min or 99min media. You should make sure you have the latest version of Nero, though this is supported from Nero 5.0 and above. And you need to have the latest firmware for your recorder model, as it will contain information to enable over burning, but most importantly, it will contain Read/Write strategies for new CDR and CDRW brand of media and can resolve many issues you may otherwise run into.
You MUST burn in Disc-At-Once or Disc-At-Once 96 write mode or you can not over burn. The multisession mode is not possible, if you want to burn such CDs.
You MUST enable over burning in Nero's File -> Preferences -> Expert Features, or if you have Nero Express, do so from More -> Configure -> Expert Features.
And you must deactivate/disable Check for correct disc format from within Neros Files -> Preferences -> General, or from within Nero Expresss More -> Configure -> General settings.
When you enable Overburning in Expert Features, you should use the below settings based on the size of media you are working with:

For 80min media set to - 82:00
For 90min media set to - 89:30
For 99min media set to - 99:54:74

Important Note: You can set it to 99:54:74 min so it will always enable burning to the max regardless of media used.

Cool! Congrats! Cool

Funny thing...when I am going to do an overburn, Nero always tells me that it can't write to this disc unless multi-session is disabled...so, it does it automatically for me whenever I try an overburn. I just click "ok" on the pop-up warning...I have never manually changed this setting.

Did it not do the same for you? No po-up? Intersesting.....

Probably multisession is automatically disabled around the last moment.A priority list that goes through probably placed a high value on the write method so it never became a question of singlesession of multisession.I remember disabling it through a few of the trials intuitively, but I didn't know the importance of it first-hand.Next time I'll keep it enabled and watch for that pop-up window warning.

He's right, there are lots of crappy CDRs and DVD+-Rs sold here. I went through several "bargain" DVD-Rs that were labelled as 4x, but wouldn't burn at over 2x. I paid a little more for some better quality ones, and had no problem burning at 4x.
