My husband and I ended up having to do a visa run after we started with our current school, so our E2 visa doesn't expire until two months after our contract finishes. We are looking at going to the public school system after this contract (bye bye hagwons!). This will be the end of Feb/beginning of March.

My question is, because my visa doesn't expire until April, would it be enough to just get a letter of release from my current employer to be able to switch visas? I will fulfill my entire contract, and I know that my director will support the switch, so I will have no issues in getting the letter, but will this be enough to get a new visa? Or will I still have to produce paperwork?

At most you'll need a LOR. A LOR is only necessary if want to transfer your visa before your contract end date.

For immigration you won't need new paperwork - just the LOR.

Depending on the POE you MAY need new paperwork as an employer requirement (as compared to a visa requirement).

ttompatz, I can provide almost all of the documents (diploma, transcripts, photos) on demand (well, the diploma would have to be the original...) but not the background check. Should we get those now, just in case?

If you are wanting to change over to a PS job then yes, it would be in your best interests to get a new one.
