Bottoms up! Here's a discussion topic that your adult conversation class can drink to.

Move Over Vodka; Korean Soju's Taking A Shot At America

see - http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/09/22/224522548/move-over-vodka-korean-sojus-taking-a-shot-at-america

"Every year, the trade magazine Drinks International puts out a list of the top-selling alcohols in the world, and in the category of spirits, there is one brand that more than doubles the sales of its closest competitor every year. Smirnoff, Jack Daniel's and Bacardi don't even come close.
That top-seller is South Korea's Jinro soju, a clear spirit traditionally made of rice."

Traditionally made of rice, now made of sweet potato or something.

Real Soju is a decent hard liquor: 40-50% alcohol, made from rice. It's too bad Jinro and company have turned it into some perverse variation on fortified wine.

The former might be able to earn a place next to rum on liquor store shelves if it wasn't so expensive/rarely brewed these days. The latter is just swill to compete with Golden Glow or Great White...

Well if they can find a way to sell it for about 1-2 dollars a bottle or 6 bucks for a 2-liter, they will certainly get a following amongst the brown paper bag crowd and become a viable alternative to Camo XXXX/ Five O'Clock/ Boone's Farm.

If it's brewed, Americans will drink it. 'taking a shot' is an overstatement. Laughing

How's this for pitch: Soju is slimming sexy. Laughing

Fully agree. A friend, who thinks nothing of dropping several hundred dollars on a bottle of wine, describes Andong soju as, "the nectar of gods".

Seriously doubt it, soju isn't designed for sipping or chugging.

i've had andong soju and i'd hardly describe it as a nectar of the gods. it might barely pass as the armpit sweat of a demi-god...

the sad thing is if korea wasn't so anti-japan we might all be drinking delicious sake instead of the colon-destroying and far inferior soju.

Right, and by that comment I'm supposed to think you're more distinguished than my friend, an elderly European aristocrat?

Two different beasts. Sake isn't distilled.

FYI, I personally prefer sake. It can be bought at the grocery store in Korea, so what's stopping you?

Koreans sure love Lexus automobiles, so I don't see why you think no Japanese product can sell well here. As for sake in particular, go buy some; as another poster said, you can get it at any supermarket or Japanese-style pub.

My most recent search for soju ( 2009 ) in Florida yielded the 750 ml bottle of Jinro for $20 ( Y1000 in Japan, never seen that size of bottle of Jillo in Korea ) and 750 ml bottle of Japanese Ty-ku soju for $30. I love my soju, but at those prices it loses some of it's charm.
