Butcher sold imported pork as local, police say

By Isaac Kim

Seoul police are investigating a butcher shop for allegedly falsely selling imported pork as domestic meat.

Police have detained the owner, Han, 51, and four employees.

Han allegedly imported pork from the United States, Canada, and Chile, and told customers the meat was from Korea.

Police say he began selling the imported pork to eight military establishments in September 2010. He allegedly sold more than 46 tons and amassed 140 million won profit, selling the pork for 13,000 won a kilogram, compared to an average 7,000 won for imported pork.

He allegedly told his employees to squash the otherwise short pork to make it longer, like the domestic product.

A shitty thing to do, but it's hard to have much sympathy for consumers who are conned into thinking paying almost twice the price for domestic food is the task of a good citizen.

What does that say about the quality of foreign beef and the high price of Korean beef?

What's your beef with beef? This article has nothing to with beef, be it Hanwoo or any other kind of beef.

It's hard to tell for sure what you're saying. I assume its Korean beef isn't worth it.

"Han woos local shoppers with fake domestic pork."

"Han allegedly said to his employees not to woorry."

Story should have been about beef for better punnage.

Think you've never overpaid for "Korean" meat?

I've probably overpaid for a great many things. I'm sure most of us have. What confuses me about this thread is the title that mentions Korean beef, and then links to a crappy article about pork. If the article was about beef, no matter how poorly written, it would at least have relevance to the thread title.
