I'm planning to buy a personal speaker when I teach in class (the microphone is over your heard and the speaker is slung over your shoulder). Have others done this? Has it improved communications with students?

This is a link for an online purchase. Has someone seen one for sale in an offline store?

Is it a good idea? I teach in an elementary school in Seoul.

I personally think it's a bad idea, especially if you're a guy. And knowing students, if you leave it around, some student is bound to sabotage it so it delays teaching class. But I've seen tons of the woman teachers use it.

I think they are horrible, many students have told me they don't like the sound of them.

I'm a male teacher in a hagwon. I use one of the speakers listed on the link you provided. I think it's an invaluable tool since it:
A) Saves my voice because I don't have to talk loudly
B) Keeps the students attentive because my voice is projected so greatly.

I am cautious, though, not to turn it up too loudly lest I want the students to complain about my booming voice.

Yes it's a great idea. Noise + more noise = silence Rolling Eyes

When you use it, remember to do the Korean things of shouting 'AH AH AH AH' for 5 minutes before hand to make sure it works!
Very Happy

It sounds like you have an unmanageable class. I'm sorry but this is your fault. Classroom managment involves clear rules, clear consequences and 100% consistency. Its your job as a teacher to create an environment conducive to learning. Chaotic madness that involves a loudspeaker in order to be heard doesn't sound like a good learning environment.

Figure out how you want the class to run and put those rules into place. Do you want total silence in the class unless you call on a student? Do you want them to raise thier hands every time they talk? Or are you looking for a less strict class?

Whatever it is it needs to be completely clear for the students. They have to know exactly what is there supposed to do and you need to be totally consistent enforcing the rules.
