Honestly, it's omnipresent. There's always someone spitting regardless of where you are. It's really a very unpleasant aspect of Korean 'culture'. But my question is: why do they do it? Do they know it makes them look very bad in the eyes of Westerners? Do they care how it makes them look? And if not, why not - given their obsession with their national image.

An anti-spitting campaign would do this country a world of good.

I've actually noticed it to be far less than a few years ago. Maybe you're living in a really small rural area? Traditions seem to stubbornly cling there.

I see it all the time as well. Actually, I noticed the spitting INCREASES whenever I'm walking around with my smoking hot girlfriend and she's dressed to look amazing before we head out to the club or an expensive restaurant.

Korean men will spit as you walk by with a Korean girl to show their disproval of you and her together. It's their way of letting the weigook know their ego took a huge hit seeing you pickup someone so smoking hot they will never have a chance with.

The spitting is just another reason why Korea can have all the money in the world yet at the end of the day be an uncivilized dump compared to the West. The funny part is that they think their culture is more civilized than ours is. Like when Bill Gates came to visit and he didn't shake the president's hand "the Korean way" with two hands. It was all over the news about how rude the weigooks are compared to Koreans. Like Bill Gates, multi billionaire, really gives a damn about Korean culture. I guess he should have pushed and shoved everyone in town, spit everywhere, and never smiled. Since that would be about the best way to show his understand of Korean culture.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

I see it near every day in Seoul. One only has to look in the direction of smokers to see them dropping spit.

At least in rural areas, people spit because you walk by a rice paddy and inhale a big gulp of fertilizer air. Or in Busan where you walk by and get a massive gulp of open sewer stench. I know people who abhor spitting, who will hack one after a nice whiff of eau de cow pattie.

Also smokers usually spit.

Anyways, taste and smell is based on molecules touching your tongue. So if you are "tasting" cow poop, that means microscopic particles of dung are hitting your tongue. As good a reason to spit as any in my view.

Not to be a broken record, but spitting vs. bulletproof glass everywhere. Or youth gangs creating no-go neighborhoods.

I leave it up to you which is more of a sign of being "uncivilized".

Why should they care? You don't care about the aspects of Western culture which bother Koreans. You aren't going to stage a campaign. Why should they give a damn about you? Why should their manners and lifestyle exist to make you happy? The Korean people do not exist in order to make you happy.

===================================

As for spitting itself, its just about where people do it. It should be in a back alley onto a patch of dirt or grime or something. Not on the sidewalk.

HHHHKKKKOOOOOOORKKK

I'm sorry, what?

I find that Koreans tend to do it when they are moving from one place to another. Getting on a bus? HORK. Getting off a bus? HORK. Walking into a bathroom? HORK. Walking out of the bathroom? HORK AGAIN.

Koreans tend to like being showy and dramatic when they do really everyday things, plus they do what everyone else does.

*choo choooooo*

You hear that folks? It's the apologist train. Always right on time to let you all know that spitting is perfectly justified, because people in other countries do much worse things. I can hear SR wearing his conductor hat spitting from the caboose right now.

I'm pretty sure that the average Korean on the street couldn't give a sh!t about what young, foreign English-teacher types might think of him or her. And rightly so IMO.

Hey, you were the one who wanted to make a comparison

I didn't say spitting was justified because other countries do worse things. I said that for you to call Koreans "uncivilized" compared to Westerners for spitting is silly compared to things like no-go neighborhoods and bullet proof glass at convenience stores.

Which is a bigger sign of being uncivilized- Spitting or bulletproof glass everywhere? Spitting or No-Go neighborhoods?

I'm not from the wild 'West'. I'm from the civilized 'West'. No bullet proof glass where I'm from.

So, STOP writing as if the USA is the West (believe that is a strawman argument) and stop the 'well, you are just as bad or worse' argument (ad hominem tu quoque).

He is quite the repetitive bore, isn't he? We can't complain about Koreans spitting because A, B or C happens somewhere in the West. Yawn. I had thought he was trying to repackage himself with his 'new look' logo. In fact I thought after he'd gotten rid of the sock avatar (a sure sign in the past to skip to the next posting) he'd actually toned things down a bit. "Apologist Light! Now thirty percent less crazy." I guess I was wrong.

One trick pony.

In my opinion, NOT dropping bodily fluid on the street IS a sign of civilized advancement. This includes urinating, defecting, spitting, farmer's blows, and vomiting.

That's not to say it's the only criteria, of course, but it is one that makes it into my books.

But bulletproof glass is not everywhere and in most cities and towns "No-Go" neighborhoods are few and far between, if they even exist. So you haven't made a comparison and haven't asked a valid question.

Spitting is is considered uncivilized behavior because it was/is a health hazard. Those are your germs that you're sharing with everyone who walks by.

As you posted, smokers spit. You smoke. Are you merely defending your own uncivilized behavior?

No lying now.

Haha... Steelrails gettin' desperate again! Good times.

So let me get this straight, Koreans spit because of bad smells or because they smoke?

~DENG!!!!!~

Yes, that explains why I regularly see, here in Daegu, on pleasant non-smelly days, young kids standing in groups slowly drooling out gobs and gobs of spit without mucus. Oh, yes, now you're going to say they all smoke.

~DENG!!!!!~

Try again. (As if I have to ask.)
