Hi, just thought I'd see if anyone has worked for this firm in the recent past.
They say that they specialise in academic proofreading and editing. They advertise positions that run Monday- Friday 9-6, but also suggest that part-time work is available. The benefits seem pretty good on paper. Does anyone know what they are like to work for?
The thing that is putting me off is the sponsored advert that they have on Worknplay. This gives me the feeling that staff turnover might be quite high!
Thanks |

Hey, I have teaching + editing experience and I applied with them. Never heard a word back - how about you? |

Yeah, I'm exactly the same. I don't know what they're looking for! |

Hey,
I originally applied back in November. I then didn't hear anything for the next 7 weeks or so. Then, out of the blue, I got an email from them about a week ago. I have no idea why it took them so long to get back in touch.
The process from that point involves two stages. Firstly, you have to produce a written sample for them to check your general level of English. This was fairly straight forward. You are asked to write around 300 words on a topic of their choosing. Secondly, if you pass the first stage, they invite you to proofread/edit an academic text.
I'm still waiting to hear back about the second stage. |

Charriere,
What is your academic (do you have a master's) and professional background, if you don't mind sharing? I'm just wondering what they're looking for.
Thanks! |

I'd love to be able to offer some advice, but unfortunately I never heard back from them! I like to think this was because they found someone with more experience than myself. The fact of the matter is however that they are still advertising, which suggests that the test case that I submitted was not up to scratch.
FYI, I do have a master's, but have very little editing/proof reading experience.
If you meet the minimum requirements, why not apply? No harm in trying, right? |

Thanks for sharing . I DID apply, but never heard back from them (they didn't even send me samples to correct!)
I think it's weird and incredibly rude that they aren't really getting back to people, but continue to post jobs online. It makes me wonder if they are sending different "samples" to people and then getting their materials corrected in that way.
Hopefully not and that's just my cynicism talking! |

I too have had the same experience of completing step 2 and never hearing back. Just out of curiosity, what topic did you have and what kind of document did you edit? |

The sample that they gave me was a study that looked at the distribution of medals at the Olympic Games. My memory is hazy as to the exact content, it was a while ago now.
I remember feeling quite confident because the paper was related to my master's. I studied Economics and had come across the methods that they used before. What's more, I hadn't long since finished the course, so the methods were still relatively fresh in my memory.
It would be interesting to know if any did end up getting employed. They still seem to be recruiting, so it's possible that they are still looking for the 'perfect' candidate! |

Judging by the quality of that advert, they need to employ someone fast. |

This company should be avoided at all costs. They also work under the names "en-co" and "harrisco." They basically cycle through foreign workers until those workers get pissed off and then they find a new set.
- Payments are never on time, often more than three months. One of the Korean workers hadn't been paid for 6 months before leaving. It's not because the company is struggling either, but the owner uses it as his personal piggy bank for other investments and other personal uses.
- There have been incidences of violence and sexual harassment in the office.
- Huge turnover. By the time I left around 70% of the staff, both Korean and foreign, had left the company.
- They don't pay pension despite taking it out of your salary. They also refuse to give an itemized breakdown of what they're taking out of paychecks. Additionally, they kept pressuring us to accept payments through bank accounts in our home country, which screams of tax dodging.
- Illegal overtime with no extra pay. Pressure to work on nights, holidays, and weekends and while you're sick.
- The office building is poorly built with bare concrete floors and poor insulation. In the summer, the building is infested with flies and other insects, and the bathrooms are never cleaned. The sink of the improvised kitchen in the office drains directly onto the floor of the women's bathroom, which makes it smell like rotten food in addition to the intense smell of urine, feces, and mold. The men's room is almost as bad.
Do yourself a favor and do not work here.

What about the pay? They most likely want the world and will pay in cheap trinkets. Generally sounds like a scam. They collect some money from people wanting documents proofread, but your work and qualifications never meet what is required for you to be paid for your work. When you give up they have some other people trying to make the grade that they will use until they give up also. That's how internet publishing scams work, in case you haven't tried those. |
