I was hoping to get some advice on what I need to do to register my upcoming marriage (my wife-to-be is Korean and we are getting married here). Do I need to visit the embassy here in Seoul before the wedding? Any direction, help, tips much appreciated!

Up the Clarets!

Congratulations!

My husband (from Northern Ireland) had to go to the embassy and get a piece of paper that stated he was "free to marry." It's stupid, you just go and swear to God that you are not a bigamist and they stamp the paper for you (also charging you some obscene amount of money). You must get that paper translated, but it doesn't have to be notarized.

Your wife needs some paperwork as well. She needs a 가족관계증명서.

Both of you obviously need to take your ID/passports.

You go to the local district office and fill out the marriage license form. Technically you need two witnesses, but they don't have to be physically present if you are willing to forge their signatures.

Remember that getting married does not mean you automatically get an F visa. That is a completely separate process.

I guess people from Yemen or Saudi Arabia need not register. Laughing

I went to the British Embassy website. Downloaded and filled out the forms they asked, got all of the relevant documentation they asked for. Went to the embassy in Seoul, filled out a few forms, then went to Jeongno Gu Office to get a Korean marriage licence, then took that marriage licence back to the British Embassy, and my marriage was then registered in both countries (It took around two hours in total). It was a pretty harmless process, however gathering the documents took a little bit of time.

Follow the steps shown in the link, and this should make things a little clearer.

Keep in mind your marriage will only be valid in Korea, not in the UK.
