|
|
Hi everyone. There seems to be some discrimination against South Africans when applying for hagwon jobs because many hagwons only hire North Americans. If you are South African and work at a hagwon or if you know a hagwon that hires South Africans could you please let me know the hagwon name and city where it's located.
Thanks for your help |

There is discrimination because a lot of you are native Afrikaans speakers - and to think Bahamians, Trinidadians, Barbadians etc are not classed as 'native speakers' a joke that is all it is. |

Fair enough. However, there are also a lot of native English speakers such as myself. Hagwons please? |

Hahaha another good point. But, I can promise you that although my ancestors are Dutch and my surname is Venter, I've never had an Afrikaans lesson in my life. I left South Africa when I was 6 and did my schooling in Asia. I know a handful of Afrikaans words but that's it. |

Well I know you're asking specifically about hagwons, but have you considered public schools? My town has had at least four South African public school teachers, so it doesn't seem like EPIK discriminates against them. |

Yeah look into EPIK, you'll probably get less work, better pay, more vacation time than a hagwon to begin with. There was a huge number of South Africans at my orientation, definitely way more than any Aussies, Brits, Irish, Canadians, or Kiwis. A few of the administrative people there mentioned EPIK had a policy of increasing the hiring of South Africans. The Saffers I've met say they like working here because the money is so much better than back home--makes sense that South Korea would be interested in hiring them. |

I would disagree discrimination on the hiring of WHITE South Africans. I know more South Africans then Australians in Korea teaching. Hagwons tend to like SAs because they can be cheap and chintzy with the pension. As SAs do not have to contribute.
Through I will admit that some schools do want North Americans but it is part of a list of things. It can easily get put aside if the applicant is a woman, or the person is good looking. |

So you say.
It would be extremely rare for any Afrikaans person, or even of second generation afrikaans descent not to be raised with it as their first language.
At best you were taught english from age 3 onwards or so. probably very unwillingly. No boer willingly learns the dreaded language of the invaders.
Lets see. When home, you rocks discriminate against south african whites of english descent left right and center but the moment you leave the volk then you suddenly want to be classified as one? |

Most afrikaaners would not be caught dead speaking english while in south africa- let alone associating with english-speaking whites. Thats how deep their general snobbery goes.
ironic then that to make a living they have to try and act English, lol. |

Thanks everyone for the replies. Some of you might not believe me but as I said earlier I'm English South African. Can't even put together a sentence in Afrikaans because I've never been taught it.
Skippy - good point about nationality being sidelined if you're a woman or good looking.
fezmond - thanks for letting me know the name of a hagwon. That's exactly what I want.
Anyone else know names of hagwons that have hired South Africans? |
