I love their beer, but the past few times I've been therr, the staff don't seem that friendly. In order to account for the 'maybe it's me' factor, I watch their interactions with other customers. They aren't very welcoming and they spend almost all of their time talking to each other. Does anybody else get this? (I'm referring to the place in Itaewon) |

I haven't been there for a while but in the past the service was always good. It's very popular nowadays, which has perhaps led to a drop in service standards. That's a shame.
I know from recent experience that the service in Reilly's is shambollocks. The beer is good but the service is a joke. |

Reilly's has probably the worst service in all of Itaewon. RMT can be crap too but every time I've been to Reilly's it's been one poor waitress trying to serve a packed room while the bar staff ignore people at the bar or saunter over when they feel like it.
Dunno if he's still there but the baldy guy in Beer O' Clock was shambollocks as an (part) owner.
Craftworks was ok for me last week. |

The really tall bald guy named C? I know a LOT of people that have had problems with him. I think it comes from him feeling secure about himself merely because he's tall.

That would be the guy. I didn't want to use his real name on here. He used to be the manager of Sam Ryan's a few years back.

The quality of work probably has something to do with the crap wages they are paid. |

Considering Magpie is right now the road with better and cheaper beers, I don't know why people go to Craftworks still.
And agreed with Reilly's being sh!t with the service. Took us 20 minutes just to get beers there back a couple of months ago, though their strawberry ale was worth the wait. |

Craftworks food and service quality has gone downhill a lot over the past year or so. It was spotty at best but every time I've been in there lately either the food, service or both has sucked.
I've talked to Dan and Alicia about it and they give me the same "we have a lot of turnover with the staff" or "the cook is new" etc. It really gets tiring. Thing is they really don't seem to care as long as the money keeps rolling in and now with all the Koreans that have discovered it (can't get a table most nights) that aint going to happen.
Now that I can get the same beer at Phillies with better service/food and there is Magpies nearby I likely wont go there much |

He was never part owner. He just helped out when it was needed. Think he's manager at JR's now..
Crafworks service has been horrible anytime I've been in there and refuse to go anymore. With Reilly's it's not much better (took her 20 minutes to get me a beer in an empty bar). Phillies has always been decent, never been to Magpie.. |

Craftworks has always had spotty service. Servers seem to think they're doing you a favour by getting you a beer. But the absolute worst service I have ever encountered in all of Itaewon (which is saying something) is at Sam Ryans. Every time I went there it was offensively bad. The last time, we had to walk out after waiting for food for over an hour and were yelled at for asking about it. Almost everyone I meet says the same thing when the subject comes up. I have no idea if they're busy anymore because I haven't been in years, but the fact that anyone goes there to be treated like crap when there are much better places all over the place astounds me. Seems like they got the attitude from 3 Alley downstairs. |

I haven't been there in years either, but it seems like 3 Alley went downhill after Gunther left. Sure, he seemed gruff and surly at first but after you went there a few times, he was a pretty funny guy. After he left and the ownership changed, that's when it went downhill. I have only to Sam Ryan's a few times, but out of those few times, I have to say that was some of the worst service I've had...ever. |

Sounds like anywhere in the US staffed by hipsters. Maybe they're trying to be more authentic. |

Reilly's and Craftworks both have despicable service. High turnover? Pay your staff better, treat your staff better. I'm an employer too, and that's the only way to combat high turnover; and what's more: it's worth it. I used to go to both these bars from time to time, but haven't done so in a while--the bad vibe/crappy service has turned me off.
I'm sure the owners don't care, though; clearly they're all about the bottom line, and both places are obviously profitable. |

It's interesting to note that a huge chunk of both Reilly's and Craftworks customers are now Korean. Perhaps this success has bred complacency.
I went to Phillies recently with my girlfriend. There was a really nice English barman who gave me a shot because it was my birthday. Plus they have Black Isle ale and Punk IPA.
I also like Magpie and the Booth but they are both way too busy most of the time. |

Wasn't that the same thing with Smokey Saloon years ago? When it first opened it had decent sized burgers, fast service and the food tasted really great. Then, the K-bloggers picked up on it, it became a mostly Korean clientele and all of sudden there's a line out the door.
I went there after this happened, decided to wait in line, only to get in and find out that fries are now ordered separately, and I sat at the table trying to eat my burger while all these "cutesy" couples were feeding each other their burgers using a knife and fork.
That was another thing. The method seemed to be: 1-take off the top bun and put it aside, 2-proceed to eat the burger with a fork and knife (like you would a steak), 3-feed your partner a bite that they can barely fit in their mouth, and finally - eat the remaining top bun as though it's a tasty piece of dessert |
