Hi everyone,

I just got a job offer from this school and I couldn't find any info on it specifically online. Let me know if anyone has worked here, or know someone who has and what there thoughts are.

hi there, i JUST saw this video recording the assault on a teacher and her boyfriend by the hagwon owner of this school. it's pretty awful. i don't know if she is still there but since they were leaving the country two days after this occurred, they didn't press charges (unfortunately). anway, i would steer pretty clear away...

Here's my outlook: After the absolutely cruddy treatment two other teachers and I got from EBY when one of their franchisees cheated us, I would never consider working for any outfit affiliated with EBY. I wouldn't even spit on them if they were on fire. EBY's one and only concern, especially when we prevailed, was that we not tarnish the franchiser's reputation. Here's a concept: act right and have your franchisees act right and you'll have a legitimately good reputation.

When teachers quit signing onto the bad hagweons, the franchisers will wake up and start making the franchisees start acting right. Yeah, I know it's a pipedream. That's because someone's going to sign on, get cheated, and get replaced by yet another victim.

Wonderland, CDI, Avalon and EBY are all chains that should be avoided - IMO, of course.

Yes, you may be desperate for a job.
Yes, there may be some locations that aren't bad.
But there are plenty of good schools, and few that are worse.

Why take the risk?

Pass these bad apples by.

As with everything, totally depends on the branch. The EBY in nowon is the flagship branch and does very well by their teachers.

My general rule is, call the school, if they won't give you the phone number/email of a current and former teacher, stay away. Also, pretty much anything that is 9-6, stay away.

It really depends on location and owner. I would never take one of these jobs in a bigger city (Seoul, Busan). Visit the school and see if there are enough classes. Figure 4-5 each day and look at their current schedule. If all you see are 1st and 2nd grade classes, do you want this? Go at 3pm, older students should be coming. Wait and see how many students come. These schools can also have adult students as long as it is at their location. Ask the owner about this.

I guess I got lucky. First job I took was with an Avalon branch and it was fantastic. In my time there only one teacher left early and that was because she was homesick. The Korean co-teachers were great, they went out for drinks after work or even took weekend trips with us. The foreign staff was very diverse and we were never asked to do anything that wasn't in our contracts. Heck my school even took my side with a problem student and expelled the kid. So yeah I'm sure there are a lot of crappy hagwon's but there are still some pretty good ones out there.
