|
|
I spoke with several people during the weekend at the conference who work for Universities in South Korea and they have been informed that their positions are ending due to downsizing. Wondering how many others are feeling the pressure from your University that you may be without a job in the near future? At least five of my friends and associates working at University will be without a job come the end of December, and they were asking if we had positions open at the University I work for.
Anyone got any news to share that might clear up the confusion of what's going on with Uni positions right now? |

I know of two universities that used the 'audit'/stricter regulations movement (whatever you want to call it) to downsize and require more hours from their teachers. Alternatively, I know of 2 (definite, my uni is one of them) who will keep the number of foreign 'professors' at the levels they have for ranking purposes. There's a lot of ambiguity at the moment. My less than expert advice to anyone in a vulnerable position would be to stay active and make sure your CV outshines the average person in the university EFL realm. |

It's true.
All the people who obtained those expensive online MAs and hooting about upgrading their credentials will now be seeking work under the first-year BA hakwon head-teacher at Moon Monkey English Club. |

Let's hope not! I've known BA uni teachers or unrelated MA's to be let go of but qualified teachers tend to be kept from my experience. that said, i do not have access to all the hiring and firings done in this country.
I know my uni gets money from the gov't for every teacher whose MA matches what he/she is teaching. that's why they tend to be kept. but again, i can't speak for other places/settings. |

I called this YEARS ago. Were finally seeing it.
All of these "professors" (they deny it here but on facebook they list themselves as that lol) that got degree mill online MAs, taking the easy way out thinking unis wouldnt care. What did you think was going to happen?
Now theyre all SOL and going to be going up against average Joes for a kindy gig at Toss English. ROFL. I said the next phase would be them all coming here for their "life isnt fair" whining. Dont worry its coming.
Luckily for me I have a DREAM JOB here in Korea so Im set and not going anywhere. The "professors" with an online MA are VERY scared right now. |

| My university has a hiring freeze for all faculty, Korean and foreign. Even when people leave they aren't replaced. This is to keep tuition down so the students don't protest again. |

The vast majority of the uni guys I know have on-line degrees in applied linguistics or TEFL.
Those are relevant degrees to teaching ESL. |

The professors will have 2 options:
A. Brush up on the hangman skills
B. Go back home and apply for a part time job at Rudy's Coffee Village |

Same here. I feel for all those hacks. I work in the Defense Mobilization Task Force of the United States Military in Republic of South Korea with 35 men under me. I specialize in Mass Communication and Supply within the perimeters of the US Embassy Facilitating full authority of the Defense Wing of the DOSP (Secret*). It takes a lot more than a chintzy online MA to do what I do.
I also have a problem with using nouns and adjectives properly. |

On-line degrees in applied linguistics or TEFL are as relevant to teaching as paper airplanes and spit balls are relevant to aerospace flight training. |

So the Korean uni's are going to stop recognizing "on-line / distance ed" style MA's?
Don't see it happening.
90 percent of the uni guys have these on-line MA's in TESL/Linguistics.
You ban them, and you may as well shut down every ESL Language center at every uni in Korea. |

90%? Are you sure about? I can think of a boat load of uni teachers that I know and only 2 come to mind that have on-line TESL/Linguistics.
I wouldn't bet the farm on all the ESL Language centers at every uni in Korea shutting down if the on-line MA teachers are cut. |
