So, is it OK to teach privates with your school's permission? If you can, I might try to negotiate for that in my third year with my current school.

I'm pretty sure this a big stinking N-O but I read something to the effect on a recent blog post.

I'm particularly interested because I don't think my little hagwon could afford to pay me any more than they already do. I really like the place and they really seem to like me. But I rarely have more than 5 students to a class at roughly $5 an hour from each and I make 2.3 for 30 hours. At 20 billable days per calendar month I think that works out to about 3 million won. So, maybe I could ask for a bit more in my third year?

My main concern really is I'm soon to be 40 and single... and regrettably the most important thing to any Korean woman is money. I look at my married friends and see them busting their humps but they clear triple what I do easily. As it is for me, I just don't make enough to support a family and none of the gals I've dated recently are willing to accept that.

They have a checklist that begins: car, apartment, etc., etc.

It might be time to cash out of Korea I guess. It's unfortunate that they've made the F-5 pretty much impossible for a single guy my age. When I first started teaching here in 2005 it only required 3 years of residency and 45 million in the bank. Now, pfft... I need two doctorates.

Beyond the whole marriage and starting a family issue, I think saving for a decent retirement on an E-2 scale salary is also a tough proposition.

Sorry for the rambling moan.

Do them in your hagwon and the answer is yes, it is legal.

Do them outside your hagwon and the answer (assuming you are on an E 1 or E2 visa) is a big no, it is illegal (violation of your visa status) and can get you fined (and a black mark in your immigration file and/or ordered out of the country).

That said, the chances of being caught and prosecuted, providing you are discrete, is close to "0".

How's your Korean ability? You could probably work at getting a F-2 visa and then work your way in getting the F-5 later.

I do not think it really makes any difference whose persimmons you use to teach privates. Persimmons in Korea are quite cheep, so just go ahead and buy your own. I like the ones that are 100% ripe and mushy. As far as teaching privates, are you in some type of military school?

Try Vietnam. I was visiting there, and was treated like Brad Pitt.

If you really want to marry a Korean woman, I recommend church (really).

Why would you recommend church to someone wanting to marry a Korean woman? Why would a church woman be any better than a non-church woman? Church girls have just as many bones hidden in the closet as non-church girls. Church girls can be pretty fun once you get them away from the congregation. I've been out with a few church girls. If only their present husbands knew the truth.
