From Epik website: "FBI CRC's should be apostilled by either the Department of State or the applicant's state's Secretary of State."
From gone2korea: "Although most Secretary of State Offices will apostille FBI background checksmost schools and programs in Korea will only accept FBI checks that have been Apostille authenticated by the Department of State."
I got all my apostilles from Secretary of state (california), which is why I'm asking if what gone2korea claiming is true? Is the information from epik outdated? |

I believe your CRC only needs to be apostilled by the federal government if you apply for Seoul. |

Good to know as I not interested in going there. I also heard about busan not accepting apostille from the secretary of state. I hope that's about it. |

State apostille for state level documents (copy of your degree).
National apostille for national level documents (FBI check).
You can try to get away with a state apostille on your FBI check (they are often accepted) but don't be surprised if it get rejected (as more people learn the difference).

I realized this same thing after I sent my documents to Korea. I had my SOS apostille the background check. I freaked out after I realized what you are actually supposed to do and contacted my recruiter. My recruiter showed it to the MOE, and they said it was fine and it got past immi. This was in August. I deal with Daejeon immigration. They also didn't require me to get a health check, though. So the rules vary a lot with different immigration offices it seems, and Daejeon seems to be a bit lax with procedure.
To be safe, go with the Department of State. If it's too late for you to do that, and you aren't applying to one of the bigger places, I wouldn't worry too much. Technically, the SOS is not supposed to do it (I called the DOS and they told me this), but it doesn't seem that all of immigration in Korea has caught on to this yet. But there is always that chance they could reject it, and that would suck. |
