Anyone try this? I've known a guy who dropped 30 pounds using hanyak and diet.

I've asked a few haneuisa (doctors of Oriental medicine) and they said they don't offer that because it's not ethical.

He lost the 30lbs from dieting. Hanyak isn't going to help you lose weight.

It's hypothetically possible that it could act as an appetite suppressant, which could help with the dieting.

I don't know what hanyak is comprised of, but don't they give it to sick people? I would think that last thing a sick person needs is an appetite suppressant. Maybe there are different formulas.

There are many kinds of medicine within the scope of the tradition in question, and not all are just for sickness. When my wife was trying to get pregnant she took some for it, and when my kids were still quite young it was recommended that they take a certain variety to help with their growth or some such (I refused out of hand, so I'm not sure exactly what the purported benefits were). I strongly suspect a lot of what these people do is selling snake oil, so if they refused to make him whatever diet medicine this was (maybe it had 마황 in it, which I read was once used in a now-banned appetite suppressant in the West), there must have been some real risks.

Seriously. Sometimes it almost seems like a prank. "Let's mix the most bitter herbs we can find with some blood from a deer's antlers and a few known carcinogens and see if we can get people to drink it."

Don't forget to make it expensive. That seems to help this little prank along.

And pick some random ingredient (different for each person?) that you are not supposed to take for a month with the drink. That will make it seem more legitimate.

Some Hanyak uses mahuang, also known as ephedra. You might recognize the name from diet pills back home. It's a stimulant and appetite suppressant. If you can get it in a cheap, convenient form at the hanyaksa, give it a try. You might be able to just buy the herb cheaper.

Right, right. When my mother in law was last taking some, it was, "I can't eat chicken, because of the medicine." I'm sure the Yin of the chicken would have canceled out the Yang of the deer blood or something. And like Cosmic Hum mentioned, it was not cheap, which is probably why she believed in it. Somehow, though, the stuff failed to make her feel sufficiently better that she stopped going to the doctors every day for a cold shot, whatever the Hell that is. Probably vitamin water with a bit of pain killer or something.

I tried hanyak to cure my asthma problem. It works. I don't recommend it for the sole purpose of losing weight because oriental medicine primarily deals with reinforcing the functions of the organs in your torso.

If I remember correctly ephedra has been banned by the FDA (US) due to side effects (including fatal ones.)

There were a number of pro football players who died after taking products containing ephdra.
