A nice display, but it is just a large LCD, not plasma. If you have ever seen a plasma display, they are actually beyond compare. |

Hit this link or paste "plasma vs LCD" into a google search.
Plasma vs LCD PCWorld
Plasma is better. Go into any of the numerous electronics stores here-Samsung Digital, LG, Highmart even department stores and look at those 4 and 5 foot wide wall mounted displays.
The prices will start coming down in a couple years as everyone converts. Nobody should be be buying picture tube TV's today.
Yes Demophobe but Plasmas have problems with PC. Images can burn into them spoiling your TV. I'm offering up the PC equivalent for our mutual perusal. Good thread. |

Why would you pay 5x as much for one of those things when you can get an DLP or LCD XGA-resolution projector and a screen for about 3 million won?
You can make the image 100 inches wide if you put the projector less than 10 feet from the wall. Depends on the lens, but that's about average.
And here's the thing.... you can put the projector in a suitcase and take it home with you.
Try that with a big monitor.
The main downside is that the bulbs last about 2,000 hours, but are maybe 600,000 won to replace.
I'm waiting until I fly out of Korea on vacation to the USA. Projectors are about 800,000 won less there. Also, I want one with a DVI input, because I see such a tremendous difference between the analog and DVI input on my LCD computer screen.
Here is a good site about them: http://www.projectorcentral.com/projector-reviews.cfm |

Good call, Gollum. They are an alternative, both having pros and cons...
This one looks nice...

Still $5,000, but better than $18,000.... |

Yah, that looks like a really good projector.
My goal is to get something around the $1,500 range. I keep hoping that the new Benq models will come out. They just released some with a DVI port, but they aren't available quite yet. Will have to buy one in the USA.
Look for prices on DLP projection TVs to take a nosedive by Christmas. Intel has entered the TV chip realm, and is set to debut its new chip technology, which rivals the competitors. |

Good question...one I can't answer. I am not seriously looking into this setup right now, but if I were, I would try to find the local Gateway dealer....if there is one...?
If not, then the shipping would probably be huge, and the import tax...well, how high is the sky? |

Maybe you weren't talking about me, but as I mentioned, I will wait until I fly out of Korea and buy it on vacation.
As for your import tax question... send it thru the mail and expect to pay up to 60% in customs fees on whatever electronics you buy. I saw that one on the Korean customs website.
I'd betcha it'd be the max 60%, too!
I was gonna stick it in my carry-on and carry it back in with me. Was hauling in a big mess of luggage, including several stereo boxes last year. Customs stopped me and asked me what was in it. I was angry, assuming they were gonna try to charge me for it. I sort of snapped at them, "It's my home stereo. It's used." They asked, "Why don't you buy one in Korea." I just said, "Because I have one already, it's mine."
They let me go through and didn't even open the boxes. Wouldn't count on that happening twice though. |

Gollum, you could probably get that stuff through as "Teaching tools" or some such profession-related psuedonym. I brough back a ton of electronics from Canada after my last visit and I told them that I need it for my job...it's irreplaceable.
They gave me a confused look, but I spoke with such conviction, they didn't push the issue. |

My university's lecture halls have projectors, so my co-worker and I hooked up an XBox and played Halo. Wow, it was so cool playing the game on a big screen, with 5.1 surround sound.
I use the same room for Movie Night. |
