So its that time of year again...Public School report cards. And while I revel in it as it brings me that much closer to my dearly needed vacation, I am having a bitter problem with one of the aspects of grading here...

See, the kids with money, who attend 4 or 5 hakwons a week, they are scoring really well at everything I am throwing at them. And so they should, as my curric. isnt actually rocket science. However, I am feeling really poorly over giving kids who try, but obviously dont attend Hakwons, failing marks because they dont understand.

I have to teach to the mid levels. I have been told that. I can't offer a multi-level curric (as well as because its next to impossible). I have been told that. Students must all take the same test (oral exam) and the score must be accountable. Cannot be based on improvement, just ability.

I have 30% of my mark put aside to "participation" so it allows for a little manipulation of scores, but still, in the end its the kids with money getting the high scores, and the poor kids getting the 5 or 6's outta 10. I hate it. It's wrong. It's almost as bad as me having to give Special Needs students ZEROS because they are the way they are. Argghhh.......

Sorry. 90% I love my job here, but 10%......

Anyone else in the same boat? Anyone feel the same way?

Life is not fair, but I think you are obligated to give the students the grades they earn. You're not a social worker and thier home situation is not your responsibility. Besides, I wouldn't fret too much, this grade you give is not going to be majorly significant in thier life. It's the final year of high school where they really need to get a high grade.

If you designed the test to be an accurate and fair evaluation of your classwork, and you're confident you did a good job effectively teaching your program, you have no reason to feel guilty.

That's not true (unless you're refering to the suneung). A former student of mine, who's a high school senior now, said that the current education policies make the grades earned in the first year of high school the most important. The first year grades are worth 50% of the high school GPA, the second year grades are 30%, and the third year grades are 20%.
