Hi guys
I have experience teaching esl in korea and I'm looking for an afternoon hagwon job starting late february or start of march next year in central seoul.
Advertisements for jobs and recruiters are all saying most jobs are now only offering one way airfare!?!
should I accept this?
what are everyones thoughts??
Also, other than davesesl, what are good sites for ESL seoul jobs?
thanks |

You could always take a cargo boat back home - work on there in exchange for your free ticket. |

I'd say keep looking. Fidn those that will pay return airfare. This is why you must avoid Korean recruiters at all costs. They lie through their teeth. You know they're splitting the money with the hakwon owner and keeping it, right?
Only use large proffesional recruiters if you must use a Korean one, but use western based recruiters as much as possible. Find a job with return airfare and tell the others to piss off. |

I think one should get used to this. Times are a changing, and have been for awhile now. From what I hear, there is a cap on flights for PS teachers at one million won. Also, many employers now look from within Korea first before thinking of bringing a teacher in. |

Conditions and wages have been slowly but steadily been declining for a long time now. Damn, it sucks to see things get worse. |

There'll be a group of EPIK teachers on every street corner soon, burning wood just to keep warm! |

Their jobs will get cut, then they'll stick around on the D-10 visa working a conglomeration of part time jobs for 20k an hour, the consequence of which is reduced wages for everyone. (Already happening.) |

Are you certain they only offer one-way airfare or that they offer one-way passage now and the one-way passage out of Korea when you complete the contract? |

Darn Canadians. One moves into the neighborhood and the next thing you know everyone's property value goes down. |

If you and others start accepting these offers, then it surely will become the norm. If you and everyone else reject these offers, then they won't become the norm. Quite simple really. If you're a young American, take the extra couple of months staying in mom and dad's basement working your Mcjob. This way you can get a decent job once you do finally get over here. Don't be so impatient you accept BS. If they are going to nickle and dime you on one or two things, what's not to say they won't on other things or get you over here and not pay you.
It's all about perspective son.
As for recruiters, search of American, Canadian, British, South African recruiters or whomever. If you use a Korean one, only a large professional one will do. (Though they may play their games too. But applying to multiple recruiters can cut some of that.) Only use a small Korean one if you have multiple testimonials about it. If they pressure you or try to manipulate you into a job, drop them. Nothing goodwill come of it.
Large Korean recruiters are Footprints, Korevia, etc. Western ones, Canadian Connection, Korjob Canada, Korjob, Longbridge Pacific (but they mostly recruit for CDI - mixed reviews about them), Morgan recruiting, GMSC Vancouver, Korean Horizons... Plenty more. Do some google searches and look for ads on various ESL sites.
I'm sure there are lots more that are good too. |

You get 2 million cash now. 1 million when you start and 1 million when you're done your contract. They don't care about the ticket anymore. However, if you quite before 6 months, you've got to pay like 700k back. |

Are you talking about GEPIK (who changed the pay scale for the worse) or EPIK (who did some changing for the worse with vacation and pay, but not as bad). I thought EPIK gave 1.3 for flights (and took away the first 1.3 recently for people applying from within Korea). Are they down to 1 mil now? Such a shame. But it is to be expected. Gangnam public schools took away flight money completely. This with an increased workload (more mandatory unpaid camp hours, less vacation, more paperwork, etc. >_<) all across the board for foreign public school teachers. |
