Amazing opportunities are not "luck"...they are moments when we decide to live a different way. To make a choice to listen a free audiobook on our phone or mp3 player versus the music CD, is a choice to learn instead of being entertained. Having a to-do-list is a choice to be focused for the day versus being swept up by gossip and passion.

People need to take responsibility for themselves, make better choices and work their goals. Learn something new everyday and help people around you. They will remember and that creates opportunity and people will be more willing to help you when you need it as well.

The components of success are small choices made every day.

I listen to audiobooks only; mostly nonfiction. No music except for Tool. I often think about how this practice has affected me. So far this year I've listened to 102 audiobooks. I just finished one a couple hours ago and started up on the next while I clean the apartment.

Edit: Still not rich.

Quit Dave's. Use that time to grow your wealth/build up skills that could make you richer. (I am trying to do that as well.)

I mostly browse Dave's while I'm at work. I know this is dishonest as I'm not being paid to live vicariously through others who are in the country I miss so much. But for the next 4 months I'll keep it up. As soon as I'm back at school I'll stop.

You have the F-visa through marriage to a Korean citizen right? Maybe you should come back then. You could make bank with that visa.

I plan to spend the next 20~30 years in the oil industry, so Alberta (my home province) is probably where I'll reside. It's my hope though to spend some time in Korea again. My boss (who is Korean) told me some companies do contract engineers from my company to do work in Korea, so there is always the slight possibility that I could find myself back in the ROK.

102! man, that's a lot of audio books to go through in a year. I can only get through about half that many in a year, but most are fiction and can be very long - over 40 hours to finish.

IMO, one must listen to at least one audio book read by Frank Mueller in one's life.

I couldn't agree with you more about Frank Muller! He's without a doubt my favorite narrator. It's a real shame he passed away. His reading of Stephen King's Dark Tower series, especially Wizard and Glass, is nothing short of incredible.

This year is a bit of an anomaly as I've listened to way more books than ever before. There were several months that I was able to listen at work, so including commute times I was listening for around 10 or so hours a day. A 400 page book is usually around 12-14 hours, so I was starting a new book almost every day. I keep stats on my "reading" and so far this year I've listened to the equivalent of over 52,000 pages.

My wife accuses me of having an affair with audiobooks.

The Elite lie, cheat on tasks

Quote:
The “upper class,” as defined by the study, were more likely to break the law while driving, take candy from children, lie in negotiation, cheat to raise their odds of winning a prize and endorse unethical behavior at work, the research found. The solution, Piff said, is to find a way to increase empathy among wealthier people.

Honesty and empathy are so middle-class.

Realistically though, almost everything on that list was true, or true-ish.

And since it was a list of behaviors, and people can choose to behave differently…mmm seems like their fault.

Seems like a perfect thread to brag about year end bonuses...

Just got my numbers today -- $77M won.

Now I just need to stay employed until Dec 31st when it pays out, then it's scotch and room salons. Wink

I saw this on a link that was on a cracked.com article today, or yesterday. I looked at the link and felt a bit sick. Self-righteous high and mighty stuff with biblical insanity to boot.

Here's the cracked one, it's kind of funny all the stereotypes about the poor and the rich I guess:
