South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been arrested over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria, local media say.

Police captain Sarah Mcira told local media that a woman - who died at the scene - was shot in the head and arm.

Update for a little balance ^

I think this will be the SA version of that certain NFL football player from the US! - Not to assume his guilt/innocence in the first place, just the scale of the whole things that is about to occur in the media throughout the world!

A jail term would be virtually uneccesary. the guy has to suffer with the fact he accidentally killed the love of his life.

If he was indeed charged with murder, the police don't view it as an accident.

I read she was shot in the head and the hand (defensive wound?). There are also rumors that the neighbors heard them arguing loudly.

The police will reveal details tomorrow. Until then, it's just gossip.

Certain branches of the SAF police increasingly lack credibility. You only have to look at the Shrien Dewani case.

...and OJ Simpson didn't do it (despite the DNA evidence placing him at the scene) because some LA cops beat up Rodney King.

Details have come out. If this is how it really went down, he's despicable.

Either its a tragic half-asleep accident in the early hours, or we have a narcissistic egomaniac/ control freak who loses control at times of emotional intensity.

According to the newspapers, she had clearly slept over as she was dressed in a nightgown and her phone was on the nightstand...So, there goes the theory that he mistook her for an intruder.

And, if one is to believe the newspapers, she was shot once in the bedroom as a casing was found there before she fled in the washroom. On top of that, her skull was supposedly fractured and a bloodied cricket bat was found in the bedroom. I know, seems a bit much. I find it hard to believe that someone could be smashed over the head with a bat, be shot, and still manage to flee. But, that's what the newspapers are reporting.

This isn't the movies. In reality humans are quite durable. And (for the record) one reason Americans oppose magazine size restrictions is that, in the midst of an adrenaline-fueled fight-or-flight event, a person will often not notice they've been shot, much less be subdued by a round or two.

Sure, but her skull was supposedly fractured. You'd think she would have been knocked out. Then again, maybe she already was in fight-or-flight mode when that happened.

Yeah the story that he thought she was an intruder is falling apart. Looking more brutal all the time. He clubbed her, shot her then pursued her to finish her off. The forensic evidence that is leaking out probably means he gets life and deserves it.

Yes people have been shot , sometimes more than once and continued fighting. there was a shoot out in florida where several F.B.I. agents died where the coked up criminals kept firing even though they had been shot to hell.
