What are the other phrases your students seem to trot out as if they've been drummed into them via some high school textbook?

Frankly speaking...

As time goes by....

Any others? Smile

I know one old K-teacher who overuses "frankly speaking" but otherwise I rarely hear it. I've never heard a Korean say "as time goes by."

Younger Koreans don't seem to say "frankly speaking", but a LOT of older ones do.

deeply.
As in "I'll remember that deeply" or "I feel it deeply".

That's the one that sticks out to me a lot.

"As I've told you before...", "As you already know..." or something like that. But they talk about something for the first time.

This. Although I usually hear the "as you know" version, and it's almost always followed by a racist stereotype, such as, "As you know, Koreans are a pure blood, so you should not have children with your Korean wife."

Others that my students use and abuse are "too" or "so" instead of very/really/incredibly/etc. (due to direct translation), and starting sentences with "especially/particularly" in cases in which they are incorrect (again, direct translation issue).

what cracks me up is when students don't finish things like " Teacher I expected." huh??

Or like "Teacher did you eat lunch?" "No I'm going to class" "really?"

like yeah why the hell why would I lie to you about going to teach?

or "Finished? Is that your last class?" "Nope, 2 more." "Really?"

If was done and on my way home why would I say I have 2 more??

I think they just want to have the last word.

Korean teacher: 안녕하세요.
Me: 안녕하세요.
Korean teacher: 네

- I am stuffy.
- Pighting!
- Wow, can you use chopsticks?
- I am boring (meaning I am bored)
- Whats that mean? what that meaning? what does meaning? what does that meaning? (Never heard a correct version of "what does that mean?")
