My girlfriend and I both have our Bachelor of Education and are finding it incredibly difficult to find a half decent hakwon job.

It seems we keep getting offered bottom of the barrel contracts with extremely long working hours (45-50 hrs a week) at mostly blacklisted hakwons.

REcruiters keep telling us the economy in Korea is bad right now.
The plan was not to come to Korea to work for minimum wage and a free apartment - Has this become the standard?

I was wondering if any couples had great experiences working at schools or if anyone in the community could put us in touch with a recruiter that can line us up with a half decent couples positions.

Very hard to come by these days. Many hagwons have reduced down to 1 foreign teacher which is bad for couples I'm afraid.

get a job in your own country. Korea is absolutely busting at the brim with foreigners teaching English, all 99% losers in their home country, too. Not me, I own my own business.

They aren't as common as regular single positions, but some of the recruiters on this site specifically list some couples positions. I'd contact those recruiters and see what they say. There's going to be a lot of positions opening up in the next few months as people start leaving their positions in February and March.

Couples positions aren't so common. In fact they never have been very common. They would only be possible at a medium to large sized school that intends to hire several foreign teachers.

In any case, I would not recommend them for other reasons - job security and better income. You would be better off if you found two separate positions in the same city. You don't even need to find the jobs through the same recruiter. Apply for jobs in big cities, particularly the satellite cities around Seoul. (Ask recruiters if the school is located within 30 minutes walk of a Seoul subway station.) If you both work for different schools then you won't be hit as hard if one of you gets fired, quits or the school goes out of business. Don't put all your eggs in the same basket. You can also get more money because basically one of you will get housing and the other will get housing allowance (which is AT LEAST 300,000 Won /month). If you get a couples position, the school will not give you a bigger apartment. They may say they will but from the "couples" apartments that I've seen, there is no different from the "single teacher" apartments. You might have to come over separately, but in that case the first person coming should ask the school for an apartment. Then maybe within a month the second person would come but that person would have to tell recruiters that he/she would only accept jobs in city X. The added benefit of doing it that way is that you can check out the second school in person before your partner comes over. It helps to weed out potentially bad schools.
